My kitty has had bladder crystals and after a nearly 2 week battle the vet decided it would be best if they sedated him, placed a catheter and irrigate his bladder. He was there 2 days and came home last night. He's eating and drinking and peeing fine right now. He's still on a bladder relaxant and pain medication.

My question is how long do the effects of anesthesia typically last? Last night he was kind of uncoordinated. Slightly better this morning but it's still like he has no personality. I miss my happy, chatty, bright eyed boy!

He's not hiding. He hung out on the couch with me most of the day. He just looks flat. He's not looking at me and meowing like he usually does. His eyes just look sad to me. Even when he was going to the box every few minutes last week he was still his usual happy self.

Another issue possibly......While he was there at the vet overnight he got out of the cone and has a big bump on his head, scratch on his face, and his nose is all scratched up. I'm not so happy about that. They said it was normal to leave them alone at night. No one is there from 9p to 7a. They assured me this was fine and he'd be sedated. I know you can't control animal behaviors and it could have just as easily happened in 5 minutes while someone was there but it still bothers me that it was more stressful than it needed to be. He ripped his iv out too apparently. Thank God he didn't get to the catheter. The vet assured me if shes concerned about a pet she takes them home with her! They are all super nice but I wasn't really comfortable with it. I'm just sad he hurt himself.

Can anyone share their experience with anesthesia and give me some reassurance my boy will be ok again?!?

I'm terribly sorry your cat and your had to go through this experience.  It is always stressful when they have to go under anesthesia.  Because we have a Persian and they are prone to breathing problems, i.e. brachycephalic airway syndrome, I found out the hard way to request a specific type of anesthesia. I realize this is not the case with your cat but perhaps you can call the vet and inquire what type of anesthesia they used and do some research.  It is normal for them to be a little out of sorts and groggy when they come home, did they talk with you or give you instructions regarding the effects of anesthesia?  It is a good sign that he is not hiding and once again using his litter box.  It would upset me also that he got out of his cone, had a big bump on his head and scratched up face.  We love our pets and it's perfectly normal to feel the way you do when we place our trust in veterinary care.  Keep an eye on him, you know him best and if anything seems out of sorts, e.g. mannerisms or health, by all means call the vet back or get a second opinion.  Please keep us updated on your baby.
