Im in a huge dilemma. A cat accosted me today, galloped after me, jumped all over me as I was waiting for my bus. I somehow knew she was lost. This happened to me 2 times before I know the signs. I stood for 20 minutes, misssing my buses calling the number on her collar frantically trying to get this cat sorted. I made the decision to keep her safe and took her back to my house just 100ft away which she eerily ran  the path ahead of me...spooky huh? I got her comfortable in the conservatory with everything she would need. I left her there while I went out. 3.5 hrs later in the dark and rain I get a call from the owner. She lives 2 miles from me, the roads are treacherous  She is very blase, nonchalant about it. Not relieved, not excited. She tells me she is a 'minx' (really means a pain in the ass) and tells me how she got a call from a guy she got into the van of the day before, laughs about it then tells me how shes been called previously by 2 people 3 miles up the road (the only way to get there is to cross THE most dangerous junction I have ever seen,5 pronged light system, 2 dual carriageways! humans dare not cross, so bad 1 of my friends wont drive thorugh it. Im aghast at her attitude. I go into a semi lecture mode. I explain my cat is indoor or supervised out. I explain the perils of such a friendly cat.  tell her that a garden can be catproofed. I offer to design it myself (I did this twice before)

Im going on but long or short the cat gets collected not by her but by her aunty tomorrow. Shes out at work (all day) she appears to just put her out all day and not get back til late. I dont hink shes responsible and its on my mind and conscience. She is such a little darling so delicate, friendly sweet. Its unbearable to think of her as hit by car or stolen for some sinister means. What the beep to do? Exactly the same thing happened 3.5 yrs ago with another cat and the owner swore he would be kept in....2 wks after he was killed. I knew I should have given him to a rescue. She is a v bad owner, lives nearby, leaves her remaining cat out all day and night.  She says she is chipped, can a rescue take her? What should I do? Please advise. Thanks all,

If they loved that cat they would have come immediately to get her. I would apologize about the cat running away when you opened your door and then keep her.

I would call her up and offer to buy the cat from her.   She is obviously not going to keep the cat in and you are absolutely right, the cat's days are probably numbered the way things are now.  If she turns down your offer to purchase the cat, then you have a tough decision to make about keeping her anyway.  The fact that the cat is chipped and has a collar with contact info means you can't just claim this little darling as a stray, which I would be very tempted to do.  As to the possibility of the cat "running away" before the aunt can pick her up, you would not be the first person to rescue a cat that way but it''s not the best way to go about it.

Thx lots for your reply. Unfortunately I took her to a vet/rescue and they scanned her. She is legitimately owned by the contacted owner. They cannot give her to me or take her from this owner. Once chipped a cat is virtually enslaved to an owner (here in uk anyway) and only f lost for a long time, unscanned or released by current owner can they have a new life. I wrote a statement containing the details of her call last night, my assessment/ testament about owner.. They cant take her legally. I left and broke my heart crying on a 4 mile journey back to town. Id travelled 7 miles to do this task. The 2nd bus the driver let me on before he was due out he  got out of his seat and said tol et her free on the bus. It was such fun to watch her jump like an obstacle course all over the bus. She was unfazed. She kept putting her little mitts through the carrier door to touch me all the wayon  2 buses and a taxi.

After and once in town I sat in a cafe nero crying quietly in a corner at what a waste of time it was. Ive sent little cat back to the same situation. I sent dumb owner a serious scorching text about her irresponsible ownership, to say the least. I can be a nasty mouthed being when needed.  I need to add that the so called owner did not send her aunty, did not contact me until 10am and then once contacted (with me still in vets) was not going to be able to pick her up until the afternoon,,,w t h?? Shes shocking. Im so sad. In my predicament with 1 ruined kitty I cannot take another..then would be being irresponsible.

Alarmingi more so was the words of the chip centre...oh yes we know this cat this is the 4 th time in recent weeks. I was furious when I heard this...i could hear her in the silent consultation room. Plus the vet told me. Furious!

Anyway theres my rant, guilt I have to carry. Thanks for reading.

That's awful.  No wonder you were so upset.  I'm sorry about your other kitty.  Yes, of course, you must put your own kitty first.  ((((Hugs))))  Bless you for looking out for this little girl.

I made the decision a long time ago not to return cats who came to live in our yard. The latest one this summer was spayed already. My feeling is if you can't keep your cat safe indoors then you don't deserve a pet & there is no way I am returning an animal to a person like that.

Well said Primula how right you are and thank you for support Boney Girl Dad. Im calling the chip company and complaining that they just keep letting this happen without any education or followup. Im also reporting her to the rspca. I dont care if I seem extreme, just maybe she will consider surrendering her to a rescue if she is shamed. I need to get a plan in place if this happens again to another cat, find someone willing to take a cat that belongs to a usless owner. Thanks everyone.
