I am new to your forum. I have a 16 year old cat, Ed, recently diagnosed with kidney disease. He loves Stella & Chewy's freeze dried, rehydrated. I am concerned with the phosphorus levels though. My head is swimming with numbers and feel the more I know, the more I don't. I just got this information about the phosphorus levels. I don't know if it is good or bad. Can someone give some guidance?

DINNERS FOR CATS
Phosphorus (%)
Chick, Chick Chicken--FR/FD
0.65
Duck Duck Goose--FR/FD
0.65
Sea-licious Salmon & Cod--FD
0.63
Yummy Lickin’ Salmon & Chicken--FD
0.45
Tummy Ticklin’ Turkey--FD
0.61
Absolutely Rabbit--FR
0.67

Well in truth none are really great for a CKD cat because they all contain bone. If you use it you should use a binder with it. Out of all of those the lower phos is chicken & salmon, but I'm not a fan of feeding that much fish all the time. The only freeze dried food I know of that doesn't contain bone is Fresh is Best. But theirs does contain a lot more veggies and isn't as palatable as S&C. Adding lots of water does help.

Thank you. So canned would be better I guess. He doesn't like many. He likes kibble, but I know that isnt good. What would be a binder for the phosphorus?
I appreciate your helping.

Well I wouldn't put him on kibble with CKD. I'd rather feed a CKD freeze dried food with bone than kibble any day. If he likes S&C that's great, just use a binder. I'm not really an expert on the specifics of CKD, but if you have a facebook join this group. They have files with a good list of binders as well as other resources that might help you.
