My cat had a little babe last night without our knowledge. There is only one and I know this is uncommon and would like some opinions. Mama is quite dainty in size. There is no blood around vaginal area, mama cat is eating and drinking plenty and is being extremely affectionate toward me and my husband. Baby also seems very healthy, nursing regularly, and has a great set of lungs. Mama has also miscarried once before about a year ago. So what I am wondering if t is possible she only had one kitten?

Yes, it is possible.

Can you keep mom 100% inside and away from intact males until the kitten is weaned? Have you set up a nest area?

Yes, we have her all set up in the closet where we found her and the baby. She is usually an indoor cat and must have slipped out at some point. We have a male cat, but he hasn't paid any mind to her or the kitten. He rarely goes near the closet as is, but we have it blocked off just in case. Mama even let me pick her up and really inspect her, still no blood and her belly feels normal to me. Like I said in very good spirits, and loving her baby

It's great that she's so settled. You are right to let mom be settled on her own for now. She can be spayed when the baby is 8 weeks old. Cats in heat do have a tendency to get outside.

So today I noticed mama's breathing at times seems to be more aggressive (short quick breaths) and small traces of blood in vaginal area.. No other signs of distress. Now should I be concerned?

I hate asking that, we just weren't expecting a kitten and a vet bill is not exactly in the budget unless necessary.. Here is a picture of mama and baby

Some spotting is normal for about a week after delivery. Mom cats frequently breathe heavily on and off for a few days following delivery. It's caused by after birth pains, as well as hormones. Feed mom well. Things sound normal to me! [emoji]128522[/emoji]
