Does anyone know what this could be? It's a stray kitten we took in and these spots just appeared about 2 weeks ago. We have had the kitten for about 2 months. His mood is fine and he's eating and drinking fine.

I can't seem to get an appointment with a vet till next week.  Ive been using an antifungal on it for about 3 days.

It has just started to flake and crack. I'm wondering if the antifungal is drying it out? It all started with scabs and I shaved the hair around them to better treat it.

Hi @evesp1 and welcome to TCS!
We've combined your threads and the pictures.

I'd be concerned about using an antifungal unless you know it's the treatment for the condition.   Does it seem to be getting larger?  Where is it on your kitty?

It could be many things including ringworm, allergies or a skin condition that is part of something systemic but it's very difficult to tell from a photo.  I'm wondering whether you could get to a vet sooner?

Hello @evesp1.

I'm basically on board with everything that @Mani just said above.

Skin conditions are extremely difficult to diagnose, by photos, and the vet may have to take a skin scraping and send it off to be tested.

Though, if it's something they commonly see, they could probably tell by just looking at it.

It could be anything from an initial flea allergy, or bites, to a bacterial infection. Then there is also mange and ringworm. And some animals develop skin issues from food.

(my dog had what I thought was ringworm, with roundish lesions, but it turned out to be a bacterial infection, the vet called folliculitis. The vet treated with antibiotics, and recommended some antidermatosis shampoo.)

Because the kitten is a stray, it's best to keep him or her separate from any other animals, until a vet check-up is done.

Mega vibes for you and your new kitten, that it's something fast and easily treatable. And that your vet can see you sooner.

I just wanted to suggest that perhaps you would consider using "Vetericyn Hot Spot Spray" until you can get your kitty seen by a vet.  It is simply a mixture of oxygenated water that can do not harm even if licked by the kitty!  It will soothe & promote healing on wounds.

I have used it many times on my lil boy (who has a skin disease) when he has caused sores or lesions from overgrooming himself sometimes.

I thought perhaps it could be helpful.  Just make sure it is not one of gel formulas ... only the Hot Spot Spray is the highly oxygenated water without other additives that might not be good & could be harmful.

Just a suggestion ...

Thank you so much for all the advice. I have been cleaning the spots and keeping them from getting too dry. I've even made him some neck scarves to keep his neck warm! Lol
I appreciate all the advice and suggestions.

@evesp1...Are you able to get him to a vet sooner?

It's easier to treat something in the earlier stages, to keep an infection from spreading.

It also looks quite red and painful.

Ask vet to check for eosinophilac granuloma complete, an immune-related allergy of unknown original.  It's scary and frustrating, but not life threatening.  My Siamese, tortie point, Semi, has been treated successfully for it with Atopica.  I use the capsules, as the liquid is foul and most cats hat it.  HOpe this helps.
