New Years. I like the idea of starting over. I know we're not REALLY starting over, but I like the idea of starting with a fresh notebook, not yet written in. This year has had some crazy downs, but also some crazy ups. I honestly don't know if I'll look back on it fondly or not. But I am looking forward to starting a new year.

Actually, I'd go along with that. I used to work in a paper plant and we had three holidays off a year: July 4th, Labor Day, and Christmas. All of the other holidays, we worked unless it was a scheduled day off in our normal work rotation. It was horrible and I hated it.

I work for the county now and we have more holidays off, including what Dear Richard calls "bogus" holidays: Columbus Day, MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Veterans Day, etc. I've been at this job now for almost 17 years and I still cannot believe I have those days off work! I'm still amazed.
And I like having those days away from the office.
I also work for the county. We get those "bogus" days are floating holidays--you can work them, save them up, and use them as vacation days until year's end! Or, you can use the actual day on the actual day. Do you get Election Day off? We do.

Pam, is that one of those jobs where the benefits after retirement are amazing?
I've had union jobs all my life and we always had those holidays off. There was nothing "bogus" about them. I had two amazing benefits after I retired. I get 70% of my salary for retirement and I get to keep my health insurance at no cost to me. I always had great health insurance with the union and never had to pay a cent for it. If I did not get the free health insurance I would not have been able to retire at age 60.

I don't really celebrate any holidays.

Partly because I live in Japan, where the holidays are all different to the ones I know from growing up in the UK. I always have to work on Christmas day and sometimes on New Year's Day too.

Easter, Thanks Giving and all the rest aren't celebrated here. Valentine's Day has gone through some weird, commercial misrepresentation and even though Halloween is starting to be celebrated in the big cities it hasn't made it out to the sticks yet.

That's kind of sad, but I do have the huge summer fireworks festival to cheer me up.

We had our Day of the Dead celebration last night, about 20 friends and family here. Great company and food, good conversations, toasts to our dearly departed loved ones, and toasts of appreciation for those still with us. That's my main holiday celebration for the year.

I thought Xmas was big in Japan? Even though it makes no sense.

Can't justify the radio station, but so many of us are on such tight budgets that it takes us two months of buying a tiny bit here and a tiny bit there to be able to do Christmas.

For me, Hallowe'en, and all things fall, really.  I love the colors and the smells and the cool days and nippy nights.  I had my first hot chocolate of the season when I shut my light off and blew out the pumpkin at midnight of Hallowe'en.  SIGH...But I love all of the fall/winter holidays, and I have more of them than most!  I just love the dark half of the year...long nights, short days, shivery silvery weather...I love it all.
I start preparing for Christmas for DD very early- her majesty has expensive taste. The only thing Christmas/holiday oriented really are the cards, decorations, wrapping paper and such. I buy them after Christmas when they are 75% off.  I refuse to pay full price for that stuff.

We are contracted by the state of Georgia so we follow their holiday schedule and get the following days off with pay. As far as I am concerned, any day off with pay is a good day. There are no "bogus" holidays in my world.

New Year's Day

MLK Day

Confederate Memorial Day (was April 25th this year)

Memorial Day

Independence Day

Labor Day

Columbus Day

Veteran's Day

Thanksgiving Day

Robert E Lee's birthday (we get this the day after Thanksgiving)

Christmas Day

Day after Christmas

Aka Boxing Day
Here in the US it's more like "go to the store and stand in insanely long lines to return stuff you got for Christmas and don't really like/want/need or is broken" day.

Do you get together and put things in boxes that day? Or since the holidays are pretty much over, is that the day you beat up the relatives you don't like but had to deal with during the holidays?

Every day is "Cardboard box shantytown" day in our house- at least it is in Sophie's world.

Boxing Day, apparently, is called that because the upper classes "boxed" goodies and small gifts for their servants on that day. But there is no consensus on the name. Boxing Day is lovely. A day not to travel, but to have nearby relatives drop in for leftovers. A relief after the madness of Christmas Day, which is huge in England.

They're big on decorations and fairly lights, but that's about all. It's not a holiday so most people have to work, unless it's a Sunday. I have to work Sundays, so I'm almost always working.

They do have their own version of a Christmas Cake: A spongecake covered in whipped cream and strawberries. I've no idea where they got that idea from.

Christmas is definitely my favorite holiday. I just love all the decorations, the tree, lights, all the works. It makes the house look so bright and festive. Just love it! Nothing better than being in my warm, cozy house that time of year with my husband, son, and my kitties.
The only sad part is my Mom loved Christmas as well. It is not the same without her and my Mickey.
I do try to still enjoy the holiday though. I know in my heart it is what they would both want for me.
