I have an adorable little love bug named Ziggy (her twin sisters name is Marley lol). Shes around 7 years old and a brownish kitty with blackish strips and stuff but Im not sure of her heritage. Starting maybe a year or 2 she got an upper respiratory infection. She was just so... crushed. It broke my heart. She was trying to hard to be her happy little self but she could barely breath through her nose and her fur was getting rougher and you could tell she felt like hell. Got her to the vet asap and they confirmed it was an URI and we got her all better.. But then a few months later she started not being able to breathe again.. You can hear how clogged her little nose is.. She has to breath insanely hard and you can her hear trying to breath from the other side of the house.. when she sleeps she doesnt breath as hard and her nose whistles.. Ive brought her to the vet multiple times and they keep saying nothings wrong with her and that its just normal that she cant breathe and that her nose is always clogged.. I call bullshit. 5 years of her life fine then out of nowhere she just cant breathe through her nose almost at all? She sneezes a bit more than normal I think but I think its because shes trying to blow all of the mucus and buggers out of her adorable little nose.. This is crushing my heart.. there are times she almost cant breathe at all and she runs up to me and just looks at me as if shes looking for help... but I cant do anything.. I dont know what to do.. I just pick her up and hold her and pet her to try to comfort her but I feel so helpless just as she must feel so confused and scared. Please... can someone try to help us.. Idk whats wrong with her or what to do.. Maybe its allergies of some sort? But the vet said nothing if the sort.. What would I do if it was allergies? Idk how I could even find out what shes allergic to because its a 24/7 year round thing now.. not just a summer allergy type thing... Any suggestions, thoughts, or comments are appreciated so much.. I hope that together we can find the right path to figuring out whats wrong and how to fix it. Ziggy, I, and the rest of the gang appreciate it! Thanks!!!

Have you only taken her to the one vet? Is it possible to get a 2nd or even 3rd opinion? Generally I've found vets I'm not super happy with to be told nothing is wrong. I live with my cat. I know what is not normal for them and being snuffly and unable to breathe does not sound normal. It could be allergy related, but given she was fine for 5 years I'm thinking not. Beyond that I'm sorry, I'm not a lot of help, but it doesn't sound right that they just said nothing was wrong. Poor little girl.

I am a human doctor, not a vet but I would not be happy with a snuffly cat and a vet who says that there is nothing wrong with the cat.  I agree with Tobilei that another veterinary opinion is indicated.  Be sure to tell any vet, who tells you that that there is nothing wrong with Ziggy, that there is something wrong - and ask for treatment for the nasal blockage.

There is no reason why you should accept any veterinary opinion that Ziggy has nothing wrong with her without a protest if you consider otherwise!

With regards,

Geoffrey

I hope your new vet has some answers. Cerenia, which is actually for nausea, will also open the nasal passages, and you can hold your kitty in a steamy bathroom for 10 or 15 minutes several times a day. This also helps open the nose, and most cats love the treatment.

Oh wow this sounds terrible! Poor kitty :( I think you should definitely get more than one opinion, look at reviews online for the best vets and take the poor baby there. I remember I used to look after a stray in Cyprus who had breathing difficulty and would sneeze a lot. It may be something she was born with?

UPDATE: The vet gave my kitty Azithromycin.. basically a liquid Z pack I guess.. I dont think this will help.. maybe someone who knows more could answer? SHe doesnt seem to be sick in any way other than her nose being clogged 24/7 and not being able to breathe through it. You know how you can always tell when you little furballs are sick and not feeling well? My girl seems to feel great except for the nose and I dont think azithromycin really help for that? CAn anyone confirm or deny if it may help hey blocked nose? Thanks!!!

Azithromycin is a broad spectrum antibiotic used for respiratory infections, (as well as infections elsewhere).  Your cat may have a virus infection, and if so Azithromycin will be unlikely to be of any use, but if the cat has a bacterial infection causing the snuffles, then it may be of great value.

Please remember that I am a human doctor, not a vet, but what I have just written applies to both humans and felines.

With best wishes,

Geoffrey

I am sorry to hear about your little darling's problems.  I do not know what it could possibly be myself, but I do know that your "BS meter" as his Mom is working well & you must find yet another vet if you do not get satisfaction at this second one either!

My darling had to go for that 3rd vet before we got the much needed help he deserved ... I hope your furbaby will soon get to the right vet & you will get the help deserved!!
