One of my cats has had a bout of diarrhea for about 3 days now. At first I thought it was just the boiled chicken I fed her as she usually has this small bouts when I try out new food to give her.

But this recent one hasn't cleared up till now. It's a long holiday in my country right now so the soonest I can is on thursday due to also having to work. In the meantime I'm trying to find first aid solutions. I've read online to not feed her anything for 24 hours and just give her water. I can tolerate the constant begging but I just feel sorry for the thing so I'm still feeding her. She's still lively though, still chasing a new kitten I just rescued when she has the chance.

I've also read unflavored pedialyte for infants is ok but for some reason pharmacies nearby don't have it in stock. And then I thought of gatorade. Is it okay to give her gatorade for the meantime? And if so what flavour should I get for her.

I gave my kittens chicken and rice when they had diarrhea because it was bland and wouldn't irritate their stomachs. I didn't need to try pumpkin but it is considered to fix loose stools. Here's an article about it.

Nay we dont recommend gatorade.  Exactly why, I dont rememeber the reason, but there was, I had read about it.

but your idea as such is of course sound and splendid.  Such a cat with diarrhea needs a supplement of salts and glucose sugar.

So unflavored baby pedialyte is good.  Flavored may be used if cornered, but its as with gatorade too much chemicals in it.

You can however make your own.

glucose sugar proper is best if you can get it.  Otherwise you can use common honey or white karo syrup.  Both of these do contain quite a lot of natural glucose sugar.

Salts.  In a pinch you can use common kitchen salt, NaCl, but better still is the so called minerale salt, which contains also some other salts.

My favorite as salt source is a good minerale water.  These usually contain several different salts.  You see the label.  You use the water as it is, or you can dilute it some to take down the salt concentration some, if you need or must spare money.

So, say a 330ml bottle of  mineral water, half a spoon of glucose sugar source - honey perhaps , warm up a little and stir to get the sugar dissolved and the gas gone - and voila - you do have a terrific first rate home made  pedialyte.

The addition of glucose sugar makes ALSO the cat gets some nourishment, so the non eating of 24 hours isnt that hard on her body.

The beauty of glucose sugar is it doesnt need to be dissolved, it goes straight into blood through the tissues, already in the mouth.

Later on, you can give her rice water from much overboilded rice (and some of this rice too).  This contains lotsa of glucose sugar freed from the rice.

AND you use another bottle of minerale water as part of the cooking water = the source of salts here...
