I am looking for opinions, experience, words of encouragement...

The past few weeks my 7 month old, Charlotte, will pant after play. Sometimes it's after very vigorous play and sometimes all you have to do is show her the ball. She LOVES to play fetch and would do it for hours if I'd let her. I knew the panting was not normal and scheduled an appointment with out vet yesterday (Oct 31). Charlotte is extremely aggressive so she has to go in the "happy kitty box" (gas sedation) for just routine visits. Vet proceeded to sedate her and gave her a thorough check up. She said she detected a slight murmur. She explained that it was a grade 1 and it was positional. Meaning when she shifted her, she couldn't hear the murmur anymore. It was very faint and difficult to detect. She decided to go ahead and take an X-ray while she was sedated. She showed the X-ray and explained that the heart should measure between 6-8 (relative to the spine) and Charlotte was sitting right on an 8. Still normal but the high end of normal.

Based on the results HCM was tossed around very mildly. She said she isn't sure the size is anything to be concerned about yet, she's still growing, or if the murmur was due to the sedation or not. So to be safe, we have called in a cardiologist for next Tuesday to get an ultrasound and make a definitive diagnosis.

A little history. Charlotte was abandoned at 2 weeks old. She had a respiratory and eye infection which she received antibiotics for. She has been on various antibiotics for several different things at least 5 times in her short 7 months. She was just spayed on Oct 3rd which she went through extremely well. During the spay she also had her bladder looked at for some issues there. Bladder was found to be fine. No issues at all with the spay. Very surprising considering she reacted very poorly with each vaccine and required an extended vaccine schedule with a minimum of 2 weeks between each shot. She has been tested twice for FIV/FELV and both were negative. She eats like a horse and plays like a dog. HARD. She is the baby of the family and dearly loved. This possible diagnosis is terrifying and devastating quite honestly.

At such a young age, little Charlotte might outgrow that murmur, and being on the high end of normal, is STILL NORMAL. My 15 year old has a very enlarged heart and has been on lasix for two years. He is doing fine so far, although now I worry about him developing a blood clot. Your little princess should be observed for any worsening signs, but to be honest, I think she is perfectly good to lead a normal life. You are aware of any upcoming problem now that MAY occur,(or may never develop) so that is half the battle. I have known of many cats that have had heart conditions and with medication have lived happy, long lives. Cherish your little one and let her live her life as a normal, beautiful cat, she deserves no less. Give her a kiss from me!

Thank you for your kind words! The vet did mention it was possible that she could outgrow the murmur but they expect that by 6 months old. But the murmur was so mild from what I understood, it wasn't even certain it was at issue. I'm a worrier, I just worry what they will find when they visualize it working.

I will definitely give her a kiss! She's quite ferocious so I have to be quick and sneaky, but with a face like that, I take my chances! :heart3:

Thank you for your detailed reply. I assume her lungs were fine as seen in the X-ray because there was no mention of any issue with them. She did say she found no fluid build up anywhere, so I took that as something good at least. She will also let out 2 quick pants when there is something she doesn't like or we try to pick her up and she doesn't want to be. It comes across as something she does deliberately as annoyance, but that may just be me looking for a silver lining. I will definitely update with the findings after the test next week.

UPDATE ON CHARLOTTE:

She had her ultrasound today with the cardiologist. All good news!! He could not find the murmur. He saw no abnormalities to suggest any cardiac disease. He believes that her heart has just outgrown her body right now and that in time it will catch up. There was a slight swelling of the left ventricle that he attributed to the sedation. He did not feel it was of any concern. If her symptoms persist after she reaches a year old, he suggests another ultrasound just to be safe. After discussing with our vet, he thinks the panting is more a psychological issue and suggested meds. We had been discussing meds for her for the last few months but are wanting to wait until she is a year old before we go that route.
