I came home to find my porch covered in blood, so thinking my cat destroyed an animal, I called for her and to my horror she hopped on the deck with her tail completely degloved to her butt. I honestly have never broke down like I did before in my life, but I havent dealt with much trauma like this before with humans or animals, and i love my cat to death. It seemed my cat was taking it better than me.  Either way, now she is at the emergency vet clinic and its going to cost thousands to get her fixxed up and her tail amputated. I am not even sure how far up to the spine her tail got removed as I could not look and the doctor/surgeon will be in tomorrow. I pray she makes it through, this cat is something special and I have had a lot of cats.

I am kind of freaked out on how this could happen. It was the middle of a sunny day, in a Suburban area in Solon Ohio where I cant think of any predators, especially in my neighborhood. Plus this link being the only picture that matched what it looked like didnt help (viewer discretion - get past the adds & this is literally exactly what it looks like but my cat is orange) .. And it was Halloween! Search engines making my head spin more out about animal abuse/cruelty. God I hope that was not the case and it was just an accident. But it was stripped so far down, (to the septum) the vets said. And I have been wondering from the start how, just how something like that could happen.

I'm so sorry! That's terrifying and horrifying. How is she doing right now?

I'm not sure if you have already, but have you talked to the police? It would be good to let them know, especially since there's a chance it was animal cruelty and not a predator or an accident. You might not have much knowledge of what could have happened, but it's possible somebody saw something or something similar happened to other pets (God, I hope not!).

I am going to see her today. The surgery will also be sometime today. She was freaked when it happened but the sedatives put her out well.  Either way we called the police and are going to speak with the warden and a investigator also, and see if this has been happening at all. I would never think this would be the case other than the fact it was in the middle of the day, halloween, and how crazy clean and deep the cut was. Even the vet said she cant be sure, but she thinks it could be a case of animal cruelty / ritual cruelty based off the injury. But thanks for your good wishes. The vet also thinks she will make it out okay of all this! That what means most to me.

Beyond awful!  Just unimaginable.

One of the properties I work on has a cat with terrible burn from a resident throwing hot cooking grease on her.

It hurts my soul to think that there are people like this in our world.

I am so sorry. This is horrific. It's horrible how someone could do that. I can't believe it was an accident. It's hard to believe that there are people in the world who would do such a cruel thing. Good vibes to you and your kitty.

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I hope she pulls through ok - critters can be so resilient. That is just horrible.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your prayers, good comments, and concern. Her tail is amputated and we believe she is going to make it through. Even the vets and surgeons think it was a person who did it based off the injuries. I just dont see how that is possible or how anyone would do this, and yes now I feel unsafe in my own neighborhood. Its a terrible feeling not exactly knowing.. I would do anything to find out. Well I will be keeping my eyes out thats for SURE. And the cats (I have two) will be staying inside after this.

I so hope she will make a full recovery. Whoever did this should have their fingernails pulled out. More hugs to you and your kitty.

Gosh I'm so sorry you and your kitty are going through this.  I'm glad she will be ok; but still so sorry it happened at all!

My very first cat lost a portion of her tail in a similar way (trying not to be graphic; I don't remember it too well myself because I was very young) when it was caught in the door to our apartment (which was a very big heavy metal door).  She was fine for the rest of her life once it healed.  I think my mother was the most traumatized.

Thanks again everyone. I hope she does as well. She comes home tomorrow (technically still today as it is 1 a.m. for me). I saw her earlier in the day, and she seems very mobile! But i feel so bad.. she does not understand why her tail is gone. I can tell she is in a lot of pain/confusion. I think she thinks her tail could still be there, and that someone is doing something to it, as she was walking around growling now and than, some moments panicking. Maybe its the IV and the cone making her extra uncomfortable.  I had to calm her down a few times, but I am happy she started recognizing my presence and laying down next to me. Shes just so uncomfortable, it would not last long..  Curse the person who did this if it truly was a human.  So sad these things could exist in society.

Once again I get her tomorrow. She already has her bandages off. I hope she recovers fast, but I know how hard it must be. I can not even imagine what this would feel like. Their tail probably serves as much function than one of our arms or legs if not more as it is an extension of their spine.  Any advice or tips to help the recovery?

I too am so sad that anyone could even dream of doing something like this let alone actually carry out the act. Your poor baby. I don't have any advice but I'm glad she's home where she is loved and feels comfortable. Sending love and pats to her <3
