Hi All,

I have recently adopted a very overweight...ok, obese...cat.  She is 27 pounds, and I am working help her loose weight.  However, in the interim, my problem with her is that she is not able to clean her rectum, and there is always poop stuck to her rear end.  I spray her down in the tub a few times a week, but it's kind of a burden.  She has Purina DM food, and also a constant supply of water, and a nice brand of litter (Canada Cat).  Any ideas on what I can do with this crazy girl?!

Thanks,.

Ryan

Your big girl needs her backside shaved.  When I had a big fat cat in the same situation, the vet shaved the area and it made a huge difference.  There are shavers you can get to DIY but I'd definitely take her to the groomer or the vet first to see how it's done.  It makes it easier to just wipe with pet wipes or a wet cloth every time it's necessary which reduces the need for constant baths.

BTW:  It's wonderful that you adopted her and are helping her lose that weight.
   Oh, and welcome to TCS!

You might find this info helpful for helping her lose weight and other food options that might work better. She may also need some digestive enzymes or probiotics to help. Even though she can't clean her rear if she's having good normal stools she really shouldn't need to very much.

Adding to this good advice, you might enjoy checking out the following thread:  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/245236/mickey-my-27-lbs-foster-and-his-journey-back-to-a-healthy-weight  It's the story of Mickey's weight loss and will give you some idea of what to expect on your sweetheart's journey to a healthier weight.  There are also lots of helpful tips by the original poster and other members that you might find interesting.

Like your girl,  Mickey weighed 27 pounds when he started.  I think he made it down to 14 pounds, which is big progress.
