My cat had a sudden spot of pigment appear in his left eye about 3 years ago. At that time, I was told by a vet that that was pretty normal, not to worry. I just discovered another spot on his eye and I'm beginning to worry. I've had and rescued many cats over the years, but I've never had one where their eyes had dark brown pigment show up suddenly. What on earth could this mean?

I do not know what it means. Maybe a question for a professional. I had a calico, and her eyes changed over time. Her starburst pattern became less pronounced. Brown, gold and green.

Sometimes cats get something called iris melanosis (eye freckles) and sometimes they get iris melanoma (not good). Apparently 3 years ago your Vet figured what your cat had was an eye freckle.  Now that he has another one, you may want to mention this to your Vet.  Still doesn't mean it's not another eye freckle...some cats cat a lot of them.  But definitely worth mentioning.

I am a human doctor, not a vet but In human medical practice - and I believe it is the same in veterinary practice - if you don't know the diagnosis, and it is not obviously urgent, then wait, but watch carefully.

Only three things can happen:

1. The condition will get worse, this will help your make a diagnosis.

2. The condition will get better and you have cured your patient.

3. The condition will stay the same, so wait longer.

However, if you are worried about the eye condition,n and don't feel that you can wait, then you should take the cat to a vet, preferably the same vet who reassured you last time.
With all best wishes,
Geoffrey

My almost 18 yr old Tortie Gal has those dark brown freckles that started slowly in both eyes about 3 yrs ago. Just lately in about a months time her right eye is almost back to 95% normal-just a tiny speck now and left eye has about half the size freckle now ,and these were large ones. Only difference is a change in her diet to Wysong Vitality dry (instead of Taste of the wild) and lately giving her some different wet food choices. I chose wet food with more liver for iron as I thought she was anemic and sometimes rapid breathing at rest...well tests were normal range .She just had complete check up blood/urine work -all normal! This 10 month old Calico drives her nuts sometimes playing more than the old girl wants...maybe its the extra stimulation and exercise? I saw a momma racoon with FIVE kids in Spring and yearned for one...two weeks later a friend gifted me this crazy kitten (as a surprise gift) who resembles one! Moral of story? careful what you wish for!!
