Hi everyone,

First of all, I am new here and wanted to thank everyone for this site and all the information on here.

My poor 1.5 year old kitty Missy might have the dry form of FIP and i'm in fear that we'll have to put her down.  It all started about a month ago when we noticed that her eye was turning a little red.  We took her to the vet and they thought it was trauma to the eye and gave us some antibiotic drops.  In a couple of days of using these drops we noticed a layer of blood in the eye just covering her pupil.  We took her back into the vet and they thought it not could be some sort of eye infection so they gave us some steroid drops for her eye as well.  At this time she was still acting her normal lovey-self and constantly asking for belly rubs.   This is where she looked to take a turn for the worse.  She started acting very lethargic and mainly stayed in the basement but would still welcome loving from my wife and I.  After another week we noticed her eye start to get really swollen and red.  We took her back in and she had a 105 fever so the vet gave her a fluid shot to try and combat the fever as well as give us oral antibiotics.  After another couple of days the fever went down a bit but she was now only staying in the basement and her eye was getting more and more swollen.  WE did what the vets said and took her to an eye specialist as they said her eye was very abnormal.  The specialist couldn't determine what the issue was and told us to go to the ct emergency room as she had a 104 fever again.  We kept her in the ER for 24 hours when the doctor told us it could be one of two thing. 1. it could be Toxoplasmosis or 2, it could be FIP and we would have to put her down.  We have her home again and her eye just keeps getting worse and worse.  Now we are waiting on blood work results to tell us if she has Toxoplasmosis and if she tests negative the doctor said it can only be FIP.

I am an absolute wreck at this point as she is just the sweetest kitty and I don't want to lose my baby.  I'm also very worried about our other year old cat Wubby who we adopted at the same time because i don't want to lose her too to this virus.

From your experiences does this sound like FIP?

It could be fip but not necessarily. It could also be a bacterial, fungal, viral, Protozoa, or even a mycoplasma infection. Fever is a result of the body trying to make itself inhospitable to an infection. That really doesn't tell you much about what type of infection. It could also be that the eye itself is causing the infection and needs to go. I feel it was irresponsible of your vet to diagnose potential FIP on just two symptoms without giving you the option to go to a infectious control veterinarian for more tests. On the other hand there's so many possibilities on what type of infection and adequate testing for them can run in the thousands. Because of that most vets have no choice but to go with the most common conditions, treat for those conditions and they either get better or not.

((hugs)) to you, BTDT with my Bella, gone 2 years now.  Please try not to worry too awfully much.  If it is dry FIP, if it's any consolation, it's not as bad/swift in taking them as the wet version.  My Bella started exhibiting symptoms in July and stayed with us till October.  Hers did start with the eyes.  Doctors thought it was high blood pressure at first.  Steroid drops helped her.

We made her as comfortable as possible, loved on her always, and she pretty much let us know when it was "time".  We still miss her terribly, and her "brother" Buddy who passed shortly afterwards, succumbing to kidney failure after a year of fighting.  Both our babies were only 2.5 years old when they passed in October and December.

Please know that your baby can still have a few months to be with you, and you can take your time in saying goodbye  -- of course IF that is what your baby has.

I do SO HOPE that it's not, and can't wait to get an update, please do keep us posted.

My heart goes out to you :( :( :(

Thank you so much for sharing your story with me and I really hope I have a couple more months with my baby. We should be getting the blood work back on Wednesday and possibly learn a little bit more about what's wrong. Fingers crossed it turns out to not be FIP and the current round of meds work.

**Update** Still haven't heard back from the vets yet about any of the blood work. However Missy's eye seems to be clearing up slightly and she is beginning to come upstairs to be with us every once in a while. The only concern is that she is still not eating all the much and does seem to have lost some weight. We have a follow up appointment with the eye doctor tomorrow morning so our fingers are crossed. Still praying this ends up to not be FIP.

Okay first of all, how long have you had them and where from?

I know these are odd questions but they help determine the possibility or not.

In her eye, do you see reddish/brown color? Looks like the eye was bleeding at all? Unusual pupil?

Any yellowing color on inner eyelid?

Is she under or over 1 1/2?

Was she tested for coronavirus antibody titres? In dry fip the titre will be high, like 1280 or higher.

Hey catwoman, we adopted them from PACT about a year ago. They are both a year and a half in October. Her pupils look normal and there in no yellow color in the third eyelid. Her thirds eyelid was very swollen and red for a couple weeks and what looks to be a red irritation going around her eye. It was to the point where the bottom one was almost always half closed. She also does have what looks like blood in a layer of her eye that comes close to covering part of her pupil in the right eye. Recently her swelling seems to have gone down and her third eyelid has gone from a dark red color to pink. She is also able to have her third eyelid retracted now. One more worrysome thing is that the problems were in her right eye and we are now seeing her left eye get irritated.

Not sure but assuming you have gotten some news/results back by now, I work 12 hour shifts during the night so I disappear some days.

It's puzzling to me, her eyes do look like eyes affected by FIP.

But then FIP surfaces sooner than a year later after exposure to corona, once a year has passed it is highly unlikely of it ever surfacing, almost no cases have been reported, until of course the senior years when an older weakened cat may contract coronavirus turning in to FIP, but that's not your cat.

I am anxious to hear any news.
