Advice Needed:

Hi......

I have a 1-yr old lone cat and I want her to have friends. What do you think of this idea? I was thinking of getting her 2 companions (instead of the usual 1):

1 older cat (8 years old or thereabouts)
and
1 kitten (3-4 months old or thereabouts)

Introduct both at the same time and there will probably be less tension/bullying issues because all 3cats would be new to each other

??

It sounds like you already have some companions picked out! My thoughts diverge in 2 directions: Bringing in new cat(s) can be chaotic, and by bringing in 2 diverse cats at the same time will allow you to get thru any introduction problems at the same time. This will be more challenging than the alternative of 2 companion cats.

If your resident cat becomes very threatened by a new addition or 2, sometimes it is an easier adjustment to bring in 2 cats that were previous companions (such as littermate kittens). The 2 companion newbies will probably play with each other as they adjust to your house, and your resident cat will get drawn into that play over time (when they are ready).

It would be easier for you to get 2 littermate kittens, but commend you for seeking out an older rescue kitty. Perhaps look for an older set of companion cats also?

I think that grouping would work, but I wouldn't introduce them all at once! You could end up with more headaches than harmony!

There are several good articles here on introducing new friends.

see, this is where i'm concerned bec 2 that already have a bond might gang up on the resident? i don't know but i kinda like the idea of a multi-generational cat household. y'know, the 2 younger ones giving reverence to the wise old one, the 2 older ones babying the baby, and the middle one feeling the warm glow of 'family'
