One of my cats, Tommy is quite overweight so I want to put him to change his food diet and that would likely mean giving him much more wet food and cutting down on dry. Dry food is much easier and a lot less messy but I don't want him developing any life risking diseases in the future. This would mean I would change the diets of all my cats, my youngest is quite lean and my other is definitely heading to overweight but generally, his body is longer, so I guess the fat is distributed differently, making him look thinner than he actually is. They are currently on Sheba but this is a one-time occurrence(the brand is too expensive for me but I got a good deal so I decided to treat them. Normally I opt for the cheapest ( i.e store own brand) but sometimes branch out to Felix and Whiskers. what I am looking for is an affordable brand that isn't too calorific/rich.

Any suggests will be greatly appreciated x

I have just gotten one of my cats down to a normal weight. I fed her one-half can of Fancy Feast twice a day until the weight was off. I had to separate her from my other cat when feeding because she would gobble her food down and then eat his too.

People are going to tell you to calculate so many calories per day per pound, but I found that just too complicated. The half-can twice a day worked just fine. Fancy Feast is not as expensive as some of the other brands.

@Columbine and maybe @MServant can recommed UK brands of affordable canned foods. I would recommend brands but it's unlikely most US brands are available over on the other side of the pond.

Hi mimithegoddess mimithegoddess , and welcome to TCS :wavey:

The best cheapest brand I've found is (Butcher's) Classic Cat. Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys all stock it, and it works out at a little over £1/kg (the exact price varies from shop to shop). It's a pure meat food, and has no fillers.

The next cheapest of a similar quality is Smilla from Zooplus. If you get the 800g tins saver pack, that works out at £1.41/kg - even less if you sign up for their savings plan (small yearly charge that gives you 7% off every order). If you spend £75 or more you can get a further 3% off with the code STOCK-UP too. Not a lot, but every little helps ;)

All the other pure meat foods that I know of work out at at least double that price, so I'd say that really is your best bet :)

I should say, though, that I can't find ingredients listing for Aldi or Lidl foods, so I'm not sure how those compare. Basically, it's a case of reading the labels. I try to avoid 'grains/cerals' 'vegetable protein extracts' 'derivatives of vegetable origin' and 'various sugars'. There is NOTHING wrong with 'meat and animal derivatives' or 'meat by products' though - after all, in the wild cats will eat the whole prey after all ;)

Aldi is all over the place.

Aldi Silvester's 1+ years Sardine & Tuna Loaf is 101kcal calculated metabolisable energy per 100g – wet.

Aldi Silvester's 1+ years Casserole with Chicken, Sardine and Salmon is 79kcal calculated metabolisable energy per 100g – wet. but it has a comparatively low calcium to phosphorus ratio (0.3:1)
