Wet foods, you are right, pate is low carbs:   Sheba, Fancy Feast and Friskies Poultry Platter are the best, with meat the #1 ingredient.

Dry Foods:  None of the above dry foods.  Read the ingredients.

Purina Cat Chow:   Poultry By-Product Meal, Corn Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Ground Whole Wheat, Brewers Rice, Soy Flour, Animal Fat Preserved with Mixed-Tocopherols, Fish Meal, Animal Liver Flavor, Meat and Bone Meal, Phosphoric Acid, Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Choline Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Taurine, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Red 40, Niacin, Yellow 5, Blue 2, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Copper Sulfate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Calcium Iodate, Biotin, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K Activity), Sodium Selenite.

Meow Mix Original Choice:   Ground Yellow Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Chicken By-Product Meal, Soybean Meal, Beef Tallow (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Animal Digest, Calcium Carbonate, Turkey By-Product Meal, Salmon Meal, Ocean Fish Meal, Phosphoric Acid, Choline Chloride, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Titanium Dioxide (Color), Vitamins [Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate (Source of Vitamin B1), Riboflavin Supplement (Source of Vitamin B2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Source of Vitamin B6), Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K Activity), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement], Minerals [Ferrous Sulfate (Source of Iron), Zinc Oxide, Manganous Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite], Taurine, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Red 40, Blue 2, Rosemary Extract.

Whiskas Meaty Selections Chicken & Turkey:   Poultry By-Product Meal (Source of Glucosamine & Chondroitin Sulfate), Ground Yellow Corn, Ground Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Soybean Meal, Animal Fat (Preserved with BHA and Citric Acid), Natural Meaty, Chicken, & Turkey Flavors, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Taurine, Dl-Methionine, Vitamins (Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate [Vitamin B1], Riboflavin Supplement [Vitamin B2], D-Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride [Vitamin B6], Biotin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Folic Acid), Minerals (Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Potassium Iodide), Yucca Schidigera Extract.

Friskies Indoor Delights:   Ground Yellow Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Chicken By-Product Meal, Meat and Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, Beef Tallow Preserved with Mixed-Tocopherols (Form of Vitamin E), Turkey By-Product Meal, Powdered Cellulose, Animal Liver Flavor, Soybean Hulls, Malt Extract, Phosphoric Acid, Calcium Carbonate, Salt, Choline Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Dried Cheese Powder, Parsley Flakes, Added Color, Taurine, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Yellow 6, Manganese Sulfate, Niacin, Yellow 5, Red 40, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Blue 2, Copper Sulfate, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Calcium Iodate, Biotin, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K Activity), Sodium Selenite.

In my opinion, and what I use for my own cats, IAMS ProActive Health Healthy Adult (chicken) is the best BUDGET dry food on the market.

Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Meal, Corn Grits, Dried Beet Pulp, Poultry By-Product Meal, Natural Flavor, Dried Egg Product, Brewers Dried Yeast, Sodium Bisulfate, Potassium Chloride, Fructooligosaccharides, Animal Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, a Source of Vitamin E), Fish Oil (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, a Source of Vitamin E), Dl-Methionine, Choline Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate (Source of Vitamin B1), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (Source of Vitamin B2), Inositol, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Taurine, Minerals (Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), Rosemary Extract.

I get it at WalMart in the 22-lb bag (feeding multiple cats) and it costs $29.97. You are in Canada so you may not have WalMart there.  If you get it at www.chewy.com, you get that same price but would have to add $4.95 shipping.  Both the grocery stores and Chewy.com charge about $20 for a 16 pound bag, so the larger bag is the most economical.

I feed the three wet foods I mentioned above, mostly the Friskies Poultry Platter in the 13 oz. cans because it is the most economical.  It's the only Friskies in the larger cans that has meat (chicken) as its first ingredient.  My cats remain healthy on this combination and have had no urinary problems at all.  One vet visit can make up all the difference in price between feeding a meat-based diet and a carb-based diet, and in my opinion, this is the cheapest way to go healthy. I am retired and on a low fixed income so this works for me.

Good luck, and I hope your husband gets a new job soon.

Find out if supermarkets and pet shops in B.C. carry these reasonably priced brands of CWS-free kibble:

Evolve

Rachael Ray Zero Grain

Purina Beyond

Nutro Indoor Adult

Diamond Naturals Kitten

Under the Sun

If you have no qualms about corn gluten products (I usually avoid it), then these varieties are a couple of steps above the brands you mentioned;

Rachael Ray Nutrish

Purina One Healthy Kitten

Purina One Indoor Advantage

Iams ProActive Kitten

They have Evolve and Pure Balance at Walmart here. They're both pretty good. Purina ONE kitten isn't bad, and you can get that almost anywhere. Yes, the kitten food even if your cat isn't a kitten---it's much higher quality than the adult foods.

If you absolutely must get one of the cheapest foods, IMO Purina Cat Chow is the best. It has a meat ingredient first and doesn't have BHA (like Whiskas, the only other one with meat first).

If you buy the largest bag, it's almost half the price per pound as the smaller bags. For Friskies, $6 for 3 pounds, that's $2 a pound! Premium pricing for a cheap food. But if you buy the biggest bag, you might pay 75 cents to a dollar per pound. Half price, that easy! If you're willing to pay $2 a pound, you can get some really high-end food, don't waste the money paying that much for a low-quality food.

I just looked up President's Choice and it looks pretty decent. If you can get that, I think it's probably the best food available to you.

If you absolutely had to choose from the above listed, I would go with Whiskas since it is the only one that doesn't have Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex, which has been a pretty controversial ingredient in some, often lower quality pet foods.

Yeah, but it has BHA, which is more definitively proven to be harmful, I think.
