Hello all.  This is my first post.  It has been a very rough 48 hours for my little family.  In 2004 I went to a local pet store and bought the most adorable kittens.  I only had planned on getting one, but they were the only two left and I felt awful separating them.  One of my favorite movies is Trading Places so I named them Randolph and Mortimer.  Their names couldn't match their personalities any better.  Randolph (we called him Randy for short) was the most sweetest and loving cats who loved to cuddle.  Mortimer, although nice and allowing anybody to pet him was little more standoffish.

Two nights ago Randy had a clot, Saddle Thrombus, to be exact, and I was forced to send him to heaven.  To say I'm devastated would be an understatement.  These two little cats were my everything.  They have been through my own personal battles with Leukemia and it was them that was the content foundation of my life for the past 12 years.

I've always wondered what type of cats they were but now as I've had to say goodbye to Randy, my thoughts have turned to Morty and how we will be alone.  One day, when we are ready we might be able to take the leap and bring another little kitten into the household.  I know each cat has their own personality, and that I'll never again find another Randy but I would like to stay within the same type of breed.  If any of you can help shed some insight on what breed they are I would truly truly appreciate it.

Randolph weighed about 18lbs and Morty is around 14.  If you need any other additional information please let me know.

Randolph on the left, Mortimer on the right.

What handsome boys! I'm so sorry for the loss of your beloved Randy. My heart is breaking for you as I can feel the depth of your feelings of grief and loss in your words. Randy was blessed that fateful day when your paths crossed and his life turned from that of homeless and unwanted to treasured and loved. I'm sorry he is not with you any longer in the physical sense but he will never leave you. He is a part of your heart and soul. Take comfort in knowing that Randy is no longer in pain or suffering and is running free across the Rainbow Bridge. Keep a close eye on your Morty as he is sure to grieve in his own way

I'm in no way an expert on cat breeds but I think both are domestic short haired tabbies, specifically brown, classic coat pattern. I wish you the best of luck and please keep in touch with us as to how you are Morty are doing [emoji]10084[/emoji]️

Welcome to the Cat Site. I am sorry it's under such sad circumstances. I know you will treasure your Randy forever.

Both of your cats are domestic short  hairs, which means they are of no particular breed. The color markings make them brown tabbies. When you decide to get another cat, go to the shelter or pet store and handle the kitties a lot until you find one that purrs and appears to be affectionate. One that is not friendly won't get along with Mortimer, and consider an adult cat who won't drive Mortimer crazy with kitten antics.

Thank you for the response.  This is part of the dilemma, my wife and son feel as though we should get another cat to keep Morty company but in all honesty the last thing I want to do is upset him.  I am a complete mess.

Wait a little while. Everyone, including Mortimer, need to grieve first. In all likelihood, Mortimer will start looking around the house for him and start crying. You all need to comfort yourselves. When the loss isn't quite so sharp and you're ready to love again, you can start looking for another kitty.

Yes I believe Mortimer is starting to figure it out.  Every time he heres a noise he looks to see if its his brother.  I'm starting to have second guesses if I did the right thing.

I concur with all of this 100%.

Here is a link to an article about grieving in cats that might be helpful:

I will add,  Randy was a classic tabby - called also for blotched, marbled or simply bulls eye.  I presume Mortimer is such a one too.

RIP Randolph!

Warm hugs!
