Hey all, this is Bunny. My husbands beloved kitten. We took her to our vet today for a well check as she had a persistent cold. We also suspected she might have been losing her sight. Well, she is completely blind. I would just like to get some suggestions on how to make it as simple for her to adjust to becoming blind. I bought felt padding for the table legs, I'm at a loss otherwise. She's 4 months old.

She had a touch of ear mites as well, which was another reason we took her in. Lots of head shaking.

Awe...she's adorable
.  Now, is she healthy in every other way other than the ear mites and the cataracts?  I'm just wondering if there is any reason why they are not discussing with you the surgical removal of the cataracts?  That should be an option, from what I've read, just like with humans, as long as she doesn't have other health issues.

But, if there is some reason why surgery is not an option, Bunny should be able to adapt to her condition pretty easily, especially since she's so young.  I imagine it will be harder on you and your husband than it will be for her.  Our best friends had an elderly cat who went blind, and the only time it ever became an issue was when they were loading or unloading their dishwasher because DJ would sometimes bump into the dishwasher door since it was open.  The thing with blind cat is, just don't rearrange your furniture, and don't leave cabinet doors open, etc. and they'll be fine.

One of our former Advisors has a blind cat who does amazing things...even climbs ladders.    Here is that cat's facebook page: www.facebook.com/jennytheblindcat

We had a young stray at our shelter who also had cataracts.  I took him to a specialist who was excited to see him as he said cataract surgery is extremely successful in cats.   Unfortunately, upon futher testing it was found that both his retinas were torn too (probably due to head trama, maybe hit by a car?) .  That surgery is iffy and only one specialist based in California does it.  And so he remains blind.  He was adopted by a wonderful family and we heard recently that they added a kitten as a companion for him.   So maybe surgery is an option, but if not,  blind kitties do quite well with some accomodations.
