First I would like to give a shout out to this forum for showing me the error of my ways - I have been feeding a grain free dry cat food for years but thanks to the all wise and caring members of the forum I am gradually switching our kitty to canned.  I did look up this link on the site: http://www.thecatsite.com/a/how-much-food-should-i-feed-my-cat.  A little personal info, about our guy - he is an 11 1/2 lb. Persian indoor neutered male, approx. 7 yrs. old.  We adopted him a year ago and got him on a better quality grain free dry food, Acana, but since the formula has changed here in the states I decided to do what is best for him and make the switch to canned wet food.  According to the link referenced above, if I understand it correctly, I should be feeding him one 5.5 oz. can per day.  Is that correct?  Any other tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing you switched to wet food to help with weight loss and to extend the life of his kidneys? There's alot of different kinds of wet food out there with varying kcal counts. What wet food are you using?

The general recommendation is to feed approximately 20 to 25 calories per pound of ideal boday with daily. Some cats may need more or less so adjust as needed. Your cat should be eating roughly 230 to 288 calories a day.

One 5.5 oz can a day may not be enough. Many 5.5 oz cans of food run around 150 calories or so. What brand of canned food are you feeding?

No he's not overweight, and yes, I thought wet food would help with his overall health.

I'm giving him Wellness grain free canned chicken but have not completely weaned him off the Acana grain free dry yet.  I wanted to do it gradually.

So a maintenance diet. If you look at the bag of dry you were feeding him there should be something telling you the amount of kcals on it. Determine how many kcals you were giving him a day and then you can use that to determine how much wet food to give him.
