Hi,

I've posted a few times on this site but I've realised I've never really introduced myself.
I own a 1yr old Devon Rex, which I love to bits. I'm toying with getting a second Devon to provide him with a buddy. She's a 2yr old & is very laid back like my Devon. I'm just concerned that the introduction process will be too stressful for him & wont go well.
Any questions from new Devon owners please just ask [emoji]128513[/emoji]

Well, a belated welcome to TCS!
I know I've seen your posts before but it's never too late to introduce yourself.  Actually, I never did it myself and wish I had.  Is your Devon Rex (name?) a mellow kind of guy or anxious?  I ask because the if he tends to be fairly laid back like the female you're considering, the introductions may not be that stressful.  Some cats even take to each other right away.  Perhaps you could try some scent swapping before you bring her into the house.  Rub a cloth over her and then let your Resident Cat sniff it. If he's strongly hostile, that's a warning that you might need a long introduction process.  Otherwise I'd strongly consider adopting her.  Most cats really do enjoy having a buddy around.

Hi margd,

He really chilled and not at all anxious, I'm not sure how territorial he'd be though as he's a very needy devon (scribbles) & craves my attention & gets it. I just get really anxious when I leave him because Devons are naturally people orientated so having a pal would give him some company & ease my anxiety.

Could you foster the female cat temporarily to see if it would work out?  I'd give it a try - they sound like their personalities are compatible.  Scribbles might need some extra attention if he's jealous at all, but this really could make him a very happy boy.  And you, as well!

I'm not sure if I could foster her I'd have to ask the owner. I've got a few options to help the transition but if I'm honest I have a good feeling about it.
Thanks for your help

Thank you all for your kind comments. Thanks for your suggestion margd I'll ask for the trial period. She's a breeder & has the rule that the cat has to be returned to her if things don't turn out, so a trial period would be a strong possibility.

Scribbles is absolutely beautiful! You might want to go to the top of the page and on the dark 'line' there is 'forums', click on that and then on cat behavior and you will find many older threads on introductions for cats to give you some tips. Introductions can take a while, mine did not tolerate each other for at least 6 months, but now are fine, it does take time and patience. Two males usually are good buddies, females are less tolerant of males and tend to boss them around. But they do provide each other with companionship and amusement. All the luck!

Hi Di & Bob,

Thank you for your kind comments. I've had a look at some of the treads & also done my own research & spoken to the other cats breeder. Scribs is very laid back & quite immature, he was the runt of the litter & is about the size of a 5-6month old kitten. The girl is also very laid back & seems like a similar personality to Scribs. The girl (Muriel) has just had kittens so will no doubt want to mother Scribs!!!! Scribs is very playful & will love having a buddy to play with & curl up next to.
I have no doubt that Scribs will be territorial as he's had the whole house & me all to himself for the past 3 months. Muriel's breeder has said that generally when she brings a new kitten home her cats usually gel within a couple of weeks. I aim to keep them a part for a week then slowly introduce them. Scribs will be able to get to the door though as she will be upstairs in one of my bedrooms so there will be some interaction from day 1. However said all that Devons are one of the friendliest breeds & tend to gel much quicker than other breeds.
