Hello Everyone,

So my 2 year old male Siberian cat is 2 months removed from a blockage and he seems to be doing just fine. He's very active and peeing, without pain, 2 to 3 times a day.

I'm probably driving myself nuts here, but the part that has me concerned is his diet. For the first month after the blockage, all he wanted to eat was the Hill's prescription C/D morsels in gravy wet food. I would put a full can down and he would lick the bowl dry. This happened twice to three times a day. After that initial month he just stopped cold and turned his nose up to the food. I tried a can of Royal Canin SO and he ate that for a day or two but then the same thing occurred. After talking to my vet, they told me to try the Royal Canin prescription dry food in combination with the Royal Canin wet food to create some variety. That seemed to do the trick, but he will only eat about a cup of the dry within a 24 hour period and he will very occasionally eat a few of the wet food morsels. He was 13 pounds before the blockage and now he is about 11.5 pounds.

1. Is it okay for a cat with urinary issues to eat a dry food only prescription diet? (I see him drinking out of his water bowls often)

2. Is it okay to mix different brands of urinary prescription food? (Ex. Hill's wet, Royal Canin Dry)

3. Any tricks i can do to make the prescription for more attractive to him?

4. Is 11.5 pounds a healthy weight for a 2 year old cat? (As mentioned above, he is a Siberian so he is a larger breed)

I appreciate your time and any advice :)

I think it's okay to  mix brands, but you might ask your Vet just to get their expertise. Honestly, I think many people have this issue.   And I know many cats with this issue who will eat only the DRY prescription food
.   I also know many people eventually venture OFF the prescription foods and try to just go for foods lower in magnesium and phosphorus and monitor their cat's PH.  There are lots of threads on it.  here's just one:  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/254489/alternatives-to-expensive-urinary-so-food

As far as the appropriate weight, every cat is different.  It entirely depends on the cat, just like with people.  I hate to say it, but this is something your Vet can tell you too.  When you said "will only eat about a cup of the dry" I gasped, because, to me, that is a HUGE amount of dry food

I'm not a fan of any RX diets, especially urinary diets. In my opinion cats with a history of urinary issues should be on 100% wet food. However, if you want to feed some RX foods thats own choice, but you may want to consider adding in regular wet foods he likes rather than RX wet foods, since he doesn't like them. The most important things with cats that have a history of urinary issues is water intake, and wet food helps ensure he's consuming enough water. Like what is mentioned above, with certain times of blockages feeding lower phos foods and monitoring pH can help. But again, more moisture the better.
