Hey all :)  I found this site when researching on google for this answer. Figured I would hop in and ask!  I've had cats for many many many years and I've never dealt with fleas, so this is a new thing for me.

My cat (Alvin) has them, and I had no idea (which makes me feel cruddy, but what can you do?)- brought him to the vet this past week as he had a little blood in his poop and they said he had fleas (the blood is fixed, btw).

Our vet recommended the seresto collar as that's what he uses on his animals, and said it works like a charm.  I read on the tin/instructions that it says between 24-48 hours or so for adult fleas to be gone.   I'm going on day 5 here and I'm STILL combing live fleas from him - maybe about 4-8 a day I'm still getting.  I know all about the cycle, and treating the home too.  I've washed EVERY blanket, sheet (etc) in this house in hot water. I have mopped. I have vacuumed twice a day (with canister that is immediately dumped, as instructed), I'm doing baseboards, corners of rooms. I'm combing him 5 times a day.  We even secluded him into a spare room with his litter and food to try and keep things a bit more controlled.  I am crazy vacuuming all the things. Cushions, moving couches, under things.   Even threw all my daughters stuffed animals in hot water/washing machine.   My cat is an indoor cat, so it's especially frustrating.   I know the eggs and all that junk can live in carpets, homes, etc.  And I know the fleas tend to be more in home vs pet and likely keep hopping on him.   However, short of sleeping with my vacuum... I can't do much more.  Oh, I'm also using a flea powder on the rugs.   The vet said his case wasn't so severe that all of the above should be clearing the issue.

So my question is....   4-8 (give or take) live squirming fleas on him DAILY as I comb normal? 5 days after I applied collar? p!

I am getting ZERO flea dirt at this point.  That's good, right? The first day I combed him I got LOADS. Yuck. Second day a lot still, but less.  Now I have NO flea dirt in the comb.

I'm just frustrated I'm still getting a handful of live ones from his fur when I'm doing ALL I can around the home and feel like I'm deep cleaning twice a week.   And I don't know what's normal or not since I've never dealt with fleas and my cats.

Thanks for any help!!

Erika

If he can handle a Seresto collar, he can more than likely handle a Capstar tablet.
Give him a bath, suds him up really good and leave him in the water/suds up for at least 10 minutes.
That will get all the flea dirt, eggs, etc off of him.  (and most of the fleas).

The next day, give him a Capstar tablet.
If you find fleas on him after that?  They are new fleas.  It means he is picking up new fleas from his environment and that $50 collar isn't to blame.

(I meant deep cleaning twice a day, not week).

I wish the collar was 50, I paid 72.  Yikes.  But I do get your point, and thank you! I have heard of those pills, I might go get some. I saw they are OTC? I also thought of a bath, I'm just worried that won't go very well with my extremely anxious cat (he was in a hoarding situation when we got him and so afraid over everything) but maybe that's just what I need to do.  Thank you!
