Hello,

I am new to the cat world.  The last year I have been thinking about adopting a cat, and yesterday I finally adopted a cat from the pound in Michigan, I brought him home and named him Mordecai.  He is a one year old male and  neuter.  He came to the pound as a stray. The paper said that he was a flaming point. I wasn't sure what that meant, and  I thought that is was just his coloring.  For he is a cream colored cat with light orange ears, spots, and tail.  Well, after I got him home I researched what he was, which is a flame point Siamese cat.  When I read about them it said that this type of cat forms strong bonds with its owner. Boy is that ever true, Mordecai, is very affectionate and has to be where ever I am.  He follows me around the house and has to be right next to be.  He is more interested in me than toys and playing.  He does play but he would rather be with me.    So, everything has been great and I just love him!!! But, tomorrow I have to work and I will be gone from 6:30am to 3:30pm.  I thought that having a cat this would be okay to leave him.  I feel that he won't be have any problems or damage the house.  I am concerned that he keeps scratching the walls but I plan on getting more scratching post today so I can put them where he keeps trying to scratch on the walls. My main concern is that I am afraid that Mordecai will become lonely (maybe nothing will happen) but over the long run I think that he will become upset and lonely and then really start being destructive and angry.  So what can I do to make this transition easier for him.  He is a wonderful cat and I am so very bonded with him.  I guess my question would be should I lock him in a small room, or not? I am worried about this because my husband works nights and he was sleeping today and Mordecai wanted to be with, Mordecai kept scratching at the door and meowed and meowed.  So if he is separated by just a door what will happen if when no one is there at all.

for a one year old cat? I wouldn't let them have the run of the whole house while I was at work. I've always contained youngens & then when you get home you can let him out. Do you have a master bathroom that's bigger than a normal bathroom? that what I've always used. then you get to worry if he's gonna open the cabinets & tear up the toilet paper!

Do you have a spare bedroom? I don't know what options you have but yes I wouldn't let him have the run of the house so soon. Over time he'll mellow out & will probably sleep much of the say, I have 3 year old cats & even a few months ago they weren't sleeping as much as they are now, so probably for at least the next year, year & half, he'll be pretty energetic.

get toys. things that roll on the floor, things with feathers on them (if he doesn't eat them) balls in plastic circles, toys that squeak, then he won't be so bored. cats don't get bored like dogs, cats are way more mellow than a dog.

make sure you leave a couple waters, in case one gets dirty & a couple plates or bowls of food, in case he eats all of one. put some nice soft blankets with him & he'll be just fine. I used to come home early a lot when I first got mine, is coming home at lunch an option?

he'll do fine. if you're really worried you can always install a camera! ahahahahahah
