About a week ago, my mom's cat had a litter of 7 kittens. Yesterday, while nobody was home, something really terrible happened & we now have 4 kittens.  Her nest is in my mom's closet. We think that the door to the room was mistakenly left open and one of our yellow labs walked in there.  Our dogs are calm & she is usually not bothered by them. Maybe one of them barked or just got too close for her comfort, but she really freaked out & 3 of those poor little babies are gone. We know it was because of the dogs because of of them got really scratched up by her.  Now she is trying to move her litter to a very unsafe location in the top of the closet.  I fear if we don't let her move them, then it will result in something really aweful.

I know this is really intense, but I desperately need advice. Thank you in advance.

I should add, we don't think the dogs hurt the babies. The wounds were too small to be from the dogs. I think she felt cornered and did it herself. :*(

Yes, it may happen a cat momma in extreme danger and stress, may turn against her kittens, in sheer panic.  Or if you want, in a very deeply instinctic mode, alike humans often do:  better the children are humanly killed by me, then these awful beasts in human shape shall have the pleasure of killing them, and perhaps who knows what more they will do...

OK, what to do.  She apparently feels unsafe where she is, and she has of course right with it, considering her experience.   I suspect the best for the moment IS to let her have them up there  on the highest shelf for the moment.  Unless you don have another safe and good place to show her and protect her.

Cat moms out in the open quite often have their kittens in the ceilings of a barn and similiar...

If you cant, have her perhaps in a big dog cage.  She is not stupid, she will understand the cage is also a protection against the dogs...

And or such there  children gates.  A clumsy dog wont jump over them.  Everything so she get her feel and need of being safe and secure. She and her children needs it.

During the time, install there a Feliway adapter - it will send calming, being at home friendly feromones.  If you can get Rescuer Remedy  asap, it may help some too.  Or some other of calming preparates.    Calming music may help some too...
