Steroids and Baseball

This is all I hear about in my house at the moment, as hubby is really teed off about it.

If indeed those players as well as those olympians, as well as others did take steriods, what do you think should be done?

I feel that it is a violation of the sporting world, that they feel they need to take performance enhancing drugs just to get better at that sport.

Those people are supposed to be role models - kids look up to them. If there are bans of performance enhancing drugs in the olympics, then why on earth are those baseball players using steroids. I feel as if Barry Bonds (if he did take the steriods) cheated at breaking Mark McGwire's record.

If banning Pete Rose from the HOF was for gambling, then people who take drugs to get better at the sport should be banned from the HOF - this is much worse than gambling.

Im a huge baseball fan, and I don't think its bad. Sure there not playing naturally, but they still have talent. Its not all about strength although a lot of it is...

On one hand, I think it's cheating. Period.

On the other, there is no rule against it in baseball like there is in the Olympics. If one person were to start taking performance enhancing drugs, then someone else would feel like they had lost their edge and would do the same to keep up. And so it begins a vicious cycle.

Quite frankly, I think MLB (the owners and execs) would have preferred if this would just go back under the carpet. I don't think they care if the players are taking steriods - they want a show for the fans. And if the fans like seeing home runs, then by god do whatever it takes to hit home runs! We can always get more players...

McGwire was 'cheating' as well, given that he also used a performance enhancing drug that has steroid like features when he broke Roger Maris's record. All you need to do is look at photos of these guys in 5 year intervals, and look for the ones who have doubled in size. The fact that out of the blue, these records which had stood for so long are suddenly broken by several guys in a row (Sosa, McGwire & Bonds) is suspicious enough.


I think steroids and the like should be banned, because they are physically so harmful, even if some fans like the results. There are enough high quality players like Derek Jeter and A-Rod who succeed thru skill & drive (& good looks). Two of the best pitchers in the game, Mariano Rivera & Pedro Martinez, are both slim enough that I could probably beat them up. And look at what the Babe accomplished, only fueled by beer!

(And, I must point out, 4 of those 5 fine players are/were NEW YORK YANKEES.)

I forgot about Mark Mcgwire, even though hubby is in denial about it.

I agree about those fine young men such as Derek Jeter and A-Rod, and others. Isn't it enough to play baseball for the love of the game, not to break every single record out there??

Don't forget Randy J. good pitcher, but very slim. He is tall though..
