It's the weekend again!

Have you ever stayed in a really unusual or memorable hotel? What made it special? Would you stay there again?

I once stayed over night in a hotel made of salt. It was in the Uyuni desert in Bolivia. The whole building was made of carved blocks of salt. Even the beds, tables and chairs were salt. Of course the first thing I did when I got there was taste the walls to see if they really were salt. The hotel staff told us not to.

It wasn't the most comfortable place I've ever stayed, but I think I'd go there again. The drive through the Uyuni salt desert to get there made it worth while.

How about you?

It wasn't outrageously different, but it was in Positano in Italy.  The motel was a C17 ex-convent and we had the Mother Superior's quarters.  It had the little holes in the wall for her religious statues etc, and a solid balcony looking out over the Mediterranean.  I just loved it.

I have stayed in a lighthouse hotel. But it wasn't as impressive as it sounds. It was small as lighthouses go; but wide. And on a bayside inlet.

I once stayed in a hotel in Jaipur, India, that was the former palace of a maharaja.  Although I was just a kid, and it was many years ago, I still remember being completely awestruck by the size of the bathrooms.  You could probably bowl in one of them!  The other thing that really struck me at the time was the truly beautiful murals painted on the walls of the dining room.

I stayed in the room where Mondrien stayed and used as a workshop. It's now part of the Hotel Atlanta which overlooks Rembrandt Square in Amsterdam.

It was an accident, when we called to enquire about booking a room we were accidentally double booked and they offered it to us for no extra charge.

It was lovely and large with lots of light and there were examples of his work on all the walls.

Our motels/hotels are pretty run of the mill. But we do like staying in B & Bs instead of motels whenever we can. In Gettysburg, we stayed at a B & B that was supposed to be haunted....nothing happened in our room, but during breakfast one morning, a couple was talking about seeing something "shimmery" during the night.

When we visited northwestern PA for a weekend with friends, we stayed in a gorgeous old lumber magnate's former house that is now a B & B, said to be haunted, but again, nothing for us. http://www.hortonhousebb.com/rooms.html

When we were in Pittsburgh last fall, we stayed at the Inn on Mexican Street, a very interesting and beautiful old B & B.    http://www.innonthemexicanwarstreets.com/

And when we visit Niagara-on-the-Lake, we always stay at B & Bs. Some are said to be haunted, but we've never seen anything.

No. I try not to stay in any kind of hotel. I prefer day trips and get home in time to sleep in my own bed. Okay, I know. That makes me a boring person. :lol3:
