I apologize for the length of this post, and I will try to keep it to just the pertinent facts in which to get help.
I have two cats. The female is the oldest and the male is quite a bit younger than her. She was about 3 years old when I brought him home as a kitten.  He treats her like she is his mom, and she treats him terrible. Oh once in a while she will be nice to him, but generally she hisses at him and smacks him. She is really prissy and overly clean, and he is a Maine Coon, and his hygiene habits, are not as good as hers. I take him and have him groomed quite often.  Because I thought maybe that was why she  treated him the way she does. He was traumatized as a kitten and is afraid of his own shadow. When I went to pick him up as a kitten, the house where he was, had only men living there, and one of the men told me, they thought he was behind the refrigerator, and proceeded to try to get him out, with a broom.  I stopped him, and told him I would wait til the kitten came out on his own, or come back another time. Anyway I got him home and like I said, they got along okay, but not great. This was 4years ago. Anytime strangers come to the house, he runs and hides, til they leave. I have a cat door and they are both allowed to come and go as they please. He has been spending more and more time outside, only to come in and eat, and run back outside. He used to spend as much time as her inside, but that has changed. I seriously think she makes him go outside. Because she likes all the attention. But have no way of knowing, if that is true. Here is the problem. Now, he will not even come in to eat. I went out and picked him up, and brought him in, but he was like in a total panic mode, wanting to go back outside. He stays on the covered patio mainly, but now he is missing completely. I have looked everywhere to no avail. Do you think it is possible for her to be making him want to stay outside? I am hoping he returns by morning, as he was here yesterday morning, but that is when I brought him in, and he panicked.  I cannot imagine him going far, because like I said, he is scared to death of EVERYTHING.   Even when him and her are laying on the couch with me, if I cough loud, he jumps and runs, even after having him for the four years.
But, could she be making him stay outside?
Thank you for any advice you can give me, it is appreciated. And I hope I explained it so it is understood.

Yes, fear can make him stay outside. You can try feliway diffusers, sprinkling bovine colostrum in his food, or if you are really determined go to the vet for a prescription of an antidepressant for both of them. Worked wonders for when the Rogue was bullying my Grisou (the Rogue turned down the bullying and Grisou started defending himself, got out of his victim mentality and started to spend more time indoors).
