Hello! Just a quick question about feeding brands of cat food that advertise 95% meat. I had a kitty pass away from IBD induced GI lymphoma and im terrified of food allergies and food aversions now! I have a new kitten, hes a Savannah/DSH mix (i guess an F8 Savannah haha?) He is 5 months old and about 7lbs, he eats like a horse but is very lean. I have been searching far and wide for brands that offer single protein 95% or higher meat and also offer a variety of meats so that I can rotate them. I need an opinion on this! So far I have found Evo, Instinct, Wevue (sp?), and I have also been using Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, Wellness signature, and some Verus. I feed a 5.5oz can twice a day with 1/4 cup of Merrick backwoods dry (he never eats the whole 1/4 cup) AM I OVER-THINKING THIS?! I think about my fur babies nutrition more then I think about my own! Hes over there at the kitchen table eating Venison and Im picking at some chicken tenders and french fries over on the couch HAHA. I guess im looking for reassurance that these are good brands and this is a good routine.

You're starting off with very good choices. You can't over think it because that's exactly what I did, I mapped out all the good foods I was going to serve & now I'm getting rid of canned food altogether. You don't know what's gonna happen in the next few months or even a year. Just feed the best that you can (you are) & take it one day at a time.

Gosh it doesn't even have any added taurine. I wouldn't use this, cats need taurine!

They source taurine naturally from meat. As you can see from the ingredient list heart is the second ingredient, so there's plenty of taurine in their foods. Feline Naturals is a very good company.

Yup, as missmimz said, Feline Naturals is AAFCO certified for adult maintenance. There's enough naturally occurring taurine that they didn't need to supplement. That's how high meat content is!

It's listed in the guaranteed analysis

Nutritional Info

Minimum Crude Protein: 10.4%
Minimum Crude Fat: 3.3%
Minimum Crude Fibre: 0.03%
Maximum Moisture: 83.4%
Calorie Content ME (kcal/kg): 650kcal/kg
Minimum Taurine: 0.25%

I've been trying to get my hands on this food for months. but no one around me sells it :( Chewy is supposed to start selling anytime now, but they can't give me a specific date

I feel comfortable with foods that don't contain taurine but do contain heart, since heart is a good source of taurine.

Dave's makes a 95% meat canned food. The Turkey & Turkey Liver, Chicken & Chicken Liver, and Beef & Beef Liver are all single protein. It's really inexpensive too.

I wish Dave's didn't contain carrageenan and gums!

Our cats love Feline Naturals foods, both freeze-dried raw and canned. The canned food is pate, which they don't usually like much but they really eat this stuff up!

Yeah, cat food was making me crazy which is why I switched to 100% homemade raw last month. I added up how much I was spending on RadCat and almost died.  Homemade was actually cheaper than feeding Dave's 12 oz cans when I did the math. Weirdly, my stupid picky cats liked it from the first taste. And I only have to make it every 1.5 months.

I think you have to compromise a little on any food. Raw is awesome but takes time and planning to prepare. Canned is super easy but most brands may contain a few things you're not crazy about. Super high quality canned is expensive. Kibble sucks period. It's just where you're willing to devote your time/money.

You're so right, @Paiger8, about the time/money considerations and all the compromises. That's key and, for me, so is balancing all the various positive and negative aspects of certain foods and deciding where I draw the line and just refuse to feed certain things, like carrageenan. Some of that's easier for me to decide than for other people because our cats have difficult digestive systems... then again, even though I would love to feed homemade raw, I'm not trusting enough of meat sources (I suspect a lot of this is my upbringing, raised by a dietician with lots of food safety training!) and am glad for the convenience of commercial raw food anyway. Despite the cost (it pains me that the really good canned foods are so expensive!) and certain ingredients I'm not happy about.

OTOH, I actually kind of enjoy making cooked food, particularly since it's done so much for Ireland. (Though I also wonder if cutting back on their foods with gums could be a factor, too, since I made two changes almost simultaneously...) At this point--even though I might like to make a few more improvements beyond further cutting back on the gums--I'm kind of at the point of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" since the cats are happy and doing well.

I'm fairly certain my cats will like it because they like the FD. I'm looking for a canned food to replace Ziwipeak for their night snack because ZP is just too expensive for me justify buying anymore and i think FN canned food is a good alternative to ZP.
