Let's say you took a cat who had vomiting, anorexia, malaise and had recently stopped drinking water to the emergency hospital and they ran blood work (all normal) and did x-rays and abdominal ultrasound and found nothing. Poisoning not a possibility. Several hours later the cat is "bright" and "alert", but he won't eat at the hospital, so there's no way to know if he's still experiencing GI symptoms.

Your choices are: Keep him at the hospital overnight for observation and they'll try to get him in to see an internist in the AM, or bring him home. What do you do?

I'm so exhausted I just can't think straight and, of course, want to do what's best for kitty. If it helps, there's a possibility Prozac withdrawal was responsible for the symptoms.

I'd consider, if it were financially feasible, keeping in hospital overnight, or request an appointment with the internist ASAP.  He can't keep on like that.  If he's bright and alert...I just am not sure.  Sending good vibes your way, regardless.

I hear ya. I had to make that decision quicker than anticipated and I'm going to bring him home- with GI meds, of course. It would have been nice to get an internist's evaluation, but they couldn't guarantee an appointment tomorrow. We'll see how things go and, if need be, I can always take him back and then he'll get a guaranteed internist evaluation as a critical patient. Right now he's classified as low priority because he's stable, improved, and he might just be riding out side-effects from withdrawal (I put him back on the Prozac).

Thanks for the kind thoughts!

Darlin,  you have a sick cat.  There isn't one person on TCS who won't be sending good vibes your way when they become aware of the situation.  This really is a good support group.

It really is
Well, I'm happy to say Tyger is acting like a happy, healthy cat again (knock on wood a hundred times!). He lavished me with kitty hugs and kisses when he was freed from the carrier and ran around exploring like he was turbocharged. Some KMR went down smoothly and I think we'll stick to a liquid diet for the rest of the night.

I'm glad to hear that he is burning brightly in the forest of your living room again!  Hugs to you both!

Good to hear...  I think I would have done the same thing; taking him home, watching him and if he got worse, I would run him into the ER Vet to stay...and make sure an Internist evaluated him...

Glad he is better...Just keep a close watch on him..
