Hello! I have a six month old kitten who just today began to keep his left ear sort of down and to the side. Upon looking inside, I have discovered a yellow/green pus-like substance on the furthermost portion of the inside of his ear. It is not deep inside, just right within a little crevice. It doesn't appear to have an odor that I can smell and he is not walking as if he is dizzy. There is no black residue in his ears whatsoever. His right ear looks perfectly fine, as does all my other cats' ears. I used a Q-Tip to gently clean the pus out of his ear, hoping maybe it was just earwax buildup and with it gone he would stop holding his ear funny. He has been napping upstairs so I figured I would leave him alone for a little. He has now come downstairs and was still keeping his ear down to the side and shaking his head a bit. I looked inside, and the pus is back. He is still playful and acting like his normal self, other than the weird head shaking and ear position. I'm wondering if this sounds like an ear infection or maybe just a wound from playing with the other cats that has become infected. His ear does not appear red or irritated. Any advice or input would be very helpful!

I do suggest a vet visit.  You CAN phone and ask, if your vet answers telephone questions.   With a little luck its just to give some antibiotic ointment.  Better now before it goes worse.  A cheap insurance for real troubles.

Anyways, better to stop the little creek than a real river, no?   As the swedish proverb says

I think your kitty needs to go to a vet.  It sounds like some type of infection.

Today he seems better. I need to look inside and check, but he isn't holding it down anymore or shaking his head at all (that I have noticed). The reason I haven't just taken him to the vet is, 1.) I can't until Saturday due to work and the vet closing early every day, and 2.) We got the two kittens (one now with an ear problem) and immediately they needed antibiotics due to sniffles and then a couple weeks later both of them PLUS the other 13 cats all be treated for something we aren't really sure what it was (this was about two months ago now), but it was costly, then the two six month olds needed shots and neutered, then recently one of my 10 year olds needed to go in for coughing when meowing or purring or even when she ate or drank. So I have spent a great deal at the vets recently, more than I have in my whole life. It just seems we have been hit with bad luck after ten years of great luck with the cats. So I sort of am really lacking funds at the moment, and I realise it is better to be safe than sorry, but if it really isn't anything to worry about, I don't want to waste money :( I will probably end up taking him anyway, I'm sure. Unless anyone knows of a good cleanser for a cat's ears I could try out? Just to see if maybe that helps..

I just looked inside. Still a yellowish waxy substance in his ear, it does appear to be a little further down as well, but not as thick looking as yesterday. He doesn't really like me touching his ear, but it doesn't look red or irritated at all on the inside. I really am hoping it is just wax buildup.

Would 21st Century Clean Ear Cat Formula be a trusted brand I could use in his ear? Or is there something more trusted?

To me it looks red, more like he got a scratch, and now be trying to get infected. When my little female got this way earlier this year, I cleaned her ears (hers was more of a buildup and dirt) with Q-tips to get into the folds and soaked with baby shampoo mixed with water. Baby shampoo is non irritating and is antibacterial. Another good cleanser is baby oil. I would keep the ear clean and observe for a while, I'm sure the holding of the ear down is due to irritation and pain. There are ear drops on Amazon to that are made of natural ingredients and are soothing. . All the luck!
