Why does nobody like black kittys?

I've noticed how black cats are less popular then most multi colored cats. I personally love black cats I have one of my own. But why are they not wanted as much as the tabby or orange cats? I've also noticed that black cats are sweeter than most of the others. I remember in June I went to the shelter to get my pitbull spayed and it was Free adoption day and all the gray, white, orange kittens had gone to their new homes and all the black kittens (literally all of them) were sitting there with a frightful look on their faces. People stared at em but nobody took them home. And I also see how at the shelters it is mostly filled with the black cats. Why is this?

Probably because of the fur not being as colourful. I personally think they look very striking and would probably add one to my collection. Black with yellow amber eyes would be so eye catching

I LOVE black cats!!! They are my favorite coat color, especially black Maine Coons. I just found a black kitten almost 2 weeks ago, and I am so in love with the little guy!

Part of it is the superstition that black cats bring bad luck, part is that there's rarely anything distinctive about their looks (cats with unusual markings have good adoption chances) and part is that they're not as photogenic as lighter-colored cats. There's also the belief that they're hyperallergenic. Black Cats May Bring More Than Bad Luck

I LOVE black cats! My cat is a bi-colour of black and white, which technically doesn't really count, but I love black cats all the same :)

They are cute little fluffballs with beautiful eyes - I've noticed that black cats tend to have the most captivating eyes; amber, yellow, copper, green... You get the point. And not to mention they're like mini black panthers!

The coolest cat we ever knew was Hydrox P. Puddy, aka Hydrox, The Old Coot. Bought him as a wee little guy for two dollars from a neighborhood kid. Black with a bit of white around his neck (think of the Tidy Cat kitty) and the neatest yellow/golden eyes. That cat never answered to "Hydrox" but if you said, "Hey, Pudder," he was right there, saying "What?".

He was an only cat for years and years, until Banshee came to live with us, then Whisper found her way into the house. And then she had her kittens, so he went from being an only cat to one of eight cats. He was't particularly amused by the whole thing and I swear there were times when he's sit on top of the TV, watch the RugKittens running around the living room and, I swear, he would shake his head at the audacity of the whole thing. Whisper decided right from day one that Hydrox was her guy and while he'd be napping, she'd go over to him and lie down next to him. He'd awaken, see her next to him, get up and snort disdainfully, smack her, and leave. She didn't care; as soon as he'd settle back down, she go over to him again and flop down with him.

That cat was awesome. The stories that I could tell you about Hydrox and the mice, Hydrox and the catnip, Hydrox and the busy balls, Hydrox and....well, everything. He was 19 when he was diagnosed with breast cancer. We wanted to give him the chance to survive, so the vet removed the tumors and for about five weeks, Hydrox sported three drainage tubes in his stomach. He healed up and was doing well. Jumping around and smacking the RugKittens around, letting them know he was still The Boss. And then the cancer came back. And this time, there was nothing we could do....it attached to the walls of his stomach. The vet came to the house, we put Hydrox back on our bed, and our vet euthanized him. Right before he died, Whisper jumped up on the bed, walked over to him, looked at him, and gave him a soft lick on his forehead; she was saying goodbye.

Black cats are not bad luck. Black cats are simply, quite simply, the most amazing cats in the world. There will always be a special place in my heart for little black boys and girls.

I love black kitties! Have for many, many years. Our first cat (the one that was there when I was born) was black with the tiny white tuft on the throat. Many years later, there was Black Cat, who sadly left this world way too soon (he was 3). And right now there is Maple and Penelopy. Maple's my ol' lazy girl, and Penelopy is my crazy little lovebug.

I have always had at least one black cat for as long as I've had cats. Every one of them has been wonderful, sweet and full of sass and personality.  It's true they are hard to photograph, though.  I think they are beautiful with those shiny ebony coats like miniature black panthers.  It breaks my heart to think of all the sweet black cats who sit in shelters for so long.  On the other hand, when I adopted beautiful black Wesley from the shelter years ago, I actually had to compete with another applicant for him.  It seems there are lots of us who appreciate black cats for the wonders they are.  We just need more people in the black-cat-lover's club!

Oooo a chance to show off my lucky kitty! This is Poppyseed, she will be 12 months old on Friday.

From wikipedia:

The folklore  surrounding black cats varies from culture to culture. The Scots  believe that a strange black cat's arrival to the home signifies prosperity. In Celtic mythology, a fairyknown as the Cat Sìth  takes the form of a black cat. Black cats are also considered good luck in the rest of Britain and Japan.  Furthermore, it is believed that a lady who owns a black cat will have many suitors.

I work at a shelter and it is so hard to adopt out these cats. The reason being mostly that their markings don't attract a lot of attention. Recently, we had a pair of 1 year old orange cats and a pair of 1 year old black cats with practically the same backstory. The orange cats had tons of applications in just a few days. After about three weeks the black ones were adopted by the only person to apply for them. They are very tricky to photograph and in the age of everyone posting everything online many people are looking for a pretty cat that will stand out. Not the best reason to choose a particular cat in my opinion, but it does happen especially with kittens as kittens don't have personalities that have fully developed yet.

My cat Carrot is a beautiful orange cat who was returned to the shelter twice. In all three times of him being at the shelter, he has only been up for adoption for 6 days total and he has an ongoing health condition.

We have a beautiful black cat that we adopted since we wanted to make sure some all black kitten got a home. The foster mom was telling us what a challenge it was for her to get the all black ones adopted out. The black and white ones had tons of applicants, but no one wanted the all black. Here's our Angua.

Yes, the markings of a cat can make one very attractive.. Black cats are simply overlooked. I took my Mingo because the shelter staff said he had an awesome personality, which he does. I didn't want a cat that slept all the time and didn't interact much. He is a very playful companion.

My second cat, I did take because of her coloring. I thought she was so pretty, and frankly, awesome personality or not, black is boring. It turned out that Lily is the lap cat I always wanted too.

I think black cats are absolutely gorgeous.  I call Connor my little panther.  He's quite a vicious predator.  Those catnip mice didn't stand a chance.
