I'm new to this site and I think I posted in the wrong forum so I'm reposting in this category. I apologize for the duplicate.

I have a Siamese mix female kitty. She's a sweetie but I have some issues with her. I haven't had a cat in quite awhile and even though she's a mix, her personality is 99.9999% Siamese. I got her from a shelter and she was a stray. After bringing her home, I've learned that she most likely has feline herpes. She has outbreaks of a watery eye but the main issue is sneezing (sometimes what I call a sneezing fit) and boogers go flying everywhere. It's so gross and it's near to impossible to clean off of my walls. It's like it's glue. I'm tired of finding hardened stuff all over my walls or wherever she's been sneezing. She is on a minimum of 500mg of Lysine. I use either the Now brand powder or Duralactin. Vet says she'll always have this as there is no cure. Has anyone had any luck with finding a long term remedy for this? After she got her shots, she had a horrible reaction or outbreak that I thought she was dying and that's how she was diagnosed.

Also, I have a FurGoPet comb and I use Fulminator shampoo/conditioner on her, I also add some Grizzly Salmon oil to her wet food. Is there anything I can do or feed to minimize shedding? I haven't had a cat that shed this much. She'll shake herself off and hair goes flying. Cleaning up after her is getting ridiculous. No bald spots or anything and you'd think she'd be bald after seeing how much hair comes off her when combing her. I do about 50/50 wet/kibble. She mostly eats the kibble during the night. She's a picky eater and will refuse many of the higher quality kibbles. I've tried Nature's Variety Instinct, Taste of the Wild, Wellness Core, Merrick Raw Infused, Fromm and Eagle Pack. Fromm and Eagle Pack have been the ones she'll eat the most of but I feel that her fur is dry. She was better on Science Diet which is what she ate when I got her. I know wet food is best but I do need the kibble for times where we might go away overnight or something like that where she can't come along. Budget wise, I can't afford to solely a high quality wet food. To add more wet food, I'm using some higher end foods and Purina Pro Plan Grain free and a few lower quality brands that she'll actually eat. She's picky there too. If it's not a Pate, she won't eat it. She'll lick the gravy and eat a few morsels and walk away.

Any insight or recommendations about the feline herpes, shedding and diet are truly appreciated. She has no other health issues other than the herpes. I want what's best for her but I also can't break the bank.

Congrats on adopting from a shelter!  But I'm sorry about your cat's health problem(s).  Although I don't have any personal experience with feline herpes I'm hoping to bump up your thread so others may weigh in with some advice.  From what I've read it can be difficult to make an accurate diagnosis of herpes but it is treatable.  I'm a big believer in 2nd opinions and it might be worth taking your kitty to another vet to see if he or she agrees with this diagnosis.  BTW, what is her name?  Also, does the shelter you adopted her from have an agreement with a vet to treat newly adopted pets?

Her name is Xena and no she's not covered for any of the symptoms that she has through the shelter.

One of my cats has feline herpes too. We've gotten everything controlled now that he isn't in a stressful period anymore, but sometimes he does have outbreaks. We usually just give him the lysine and it goes away in a few days. I know what you mean about cat snot on walls that can be very frustrating. Has she been tested for FIV? I almost wonder if she has something besides the herpes taking out her immune system.

Yes, she was negative for FIV. It's so frustrating to not be able to help her. I read in a few places that Zithromax has helped a handful of cats get rid of it. Not sure if there is any truth to that but I have been thinking of getting a second opinion. I've only had her since July and she's still not a year old yet.
