Our 9 year old Saint Bernard was put down today. She had the dog form of dementia, and it was starting to take its toll on her until finally today when she collapsed and could no longer stand or remember who anyone was. I'm in a lot of pain right now, but I'm sure I'll eventually get through it. Freya didn't know Hemi for long, 8 months. But I'm sure she'll realize soon enough and start her own grieving process...and I don't know how to deal with a grieving cat. When do you think she'll realize? How can I help my cat through it?

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your dog, I would just be there for your cat, show her lots of attention, she will also grieve as you will, you have to let things take their course and remember that she will very much sense how you feel and pick up on your emotions. She, like you, will deal with it and work it out in due time, and as we know the pain and heartache can be devastating at times, but your heart and her's will slowly mend with time and lots of love.

God Bless...

Our hearts do not know the difference between human and dog, it just feels the tremendous loss in our lives of someone who was so very loved. Hemi spent 9 wonderful years in a home filled with love and caring, he came into your life for a reason and walked alongside you for a while on your life's journey. It is all he ever wanted. He will be missed and grieved over, but I pray you take comfort in your precious memories of happier times and try not to dwell on the end. He would be the last one to want you to be so sad when remembering him, he wants only happiness and sunshine to fill the rest of your days. Freya will miss him too, you will both need each other to learn a new life's order without Hemi in it, let the love you have for each other and for the one now gone to get you through these first sad days. That love is a permanent part of you now, it is something that is not physical, but spiritual, and will live on for the rest of your life. Let this love come to you when you are so sad, feel what he meant to you and know the legacy he left you will help you deal with the pain of loss. My heart goes out to you, hold on tight to Freya and make sure she knows you will always be there for her. It helps to have a friend. Take care......RIP dear Hemi, you will be forever loved on this earth, you will always be held in the loving hearts of those who miss you so much!

I apologize with being so late in posting; my computer wasn't working for quite a while.  I am so sorry for your loss of Hemi.  How are you and Freya now?  I hope that things have started to get better for both of you.  Even though you will never forget Hemi, my wish for you is that soon you will be able to focus on the good times.  Cats seem to recover quicker, but they do grieve.  Speck had a rough week of it after Smoke crossed.
