My 4 year old, indoor, male, grey tabby adult cat named Miso has a big lump on the one side of his mouth (pictured) and a small lump beginning on the other side of his mouth. I began to notice a bigger lump under his chin first because he was scratching at it and then waited out for a month to see if we should bring him in. After about a month, it didn't go away so we brought him in to see the vet and he gave him a shot that he said would clear most skin irritations. He also got his shots (vaccinations) updated. Brought him home and the lump under his chin cleared up after a day and a half. About a week or so later I noticed the larger lump on the side of his mouth. He occasionally scratches at it, doesn't seem to be bothered at all when I touch it firmly, appetite is regular (perhaps with a TAD of increased drinking), going to the bathroom as normal, and nothing in his food diet has changed. I'm not convinced it's cat acne since most forums and sites say there's black spots and I don't see any. Can anyone help me figure out what this is? The vet has quoted me $500 because Miso will not let the vet touch him, so he has to be put out so that the vet can extract fluids from the lump and send it away for testing. All that costs a whopping $500!? Anyways, hoping for any help here.

That really does need to be seen by the vet to rule out anything nasty.  Has your kitty been diagnosed with herpes? Sometimes these kind of ulcers pop up on herpes kitties when they're stressed.

The vet hasn't diagnosed my cat with anything yet because back when I first took him, Miso wouldn't even let himself be touched.. ha. I'm hoping this photo will help with diagnosis. I'll look into it possibly being herpes though. Thanks!

My cat had a lump on his lip that ended up being feline acne (no black stuff was seen...I've had cats with feline acne before). I thought it was an absess and brought him in. They gave me pads with medication on them. All I had to do was rub the spot twice a day with a pad until it went away (4 days later it was gone). The medicine is called chlorhexidine. This *could* be the same thing. I would get a second opinion since he's had similar spots before. If the others went away, why the need to Lance it? If he can't examine the cat, how does the vet know that the lump needs lancing? You need a second opinion from a vet who knows how to handle cats without knocking them out. I've had cats that are difficult at vets offices and they just wrapped towels around them like a burrito with the part they needed to look at left out. Knocking your cat out should be last resort. Where is the yellow stuff? I don't see it.

Thanks for your reply BelleL! I did hear my cat freaking out in the other room. I'm not sure if their extent in trying to get him to be still but a second opinion is a good recommendation, thanks. Update though, the bumps on the side went away and migrated to under his chin to form a line of a bump you can only feel. I'm worried, but can't afford the $500 they quoted.

You can see some yellowish discharge in this photo but currently there's nothing coming from the bumps that have moved under his chin.

Ok, here's a thought. How about the vet prescribe a sedative that you can give to Miso at home and then take him to the vet? That's way less expensive than using the isofluorine and also needing an extra person to watch him while he's under.

Very strange that the bumps keep moving. I thought maybe a flea allergy, but then i found this:

There were about 4, if i remember correctly, that described what you've shown us.

Thanks Belle! The bumps keep disappearing and then coming back. They've now disappeared from his chin back to the sides of his mouth.

Just based on the article I sent you (though I need to do more research), it sounds like he needs a skin scrape instead of aspirating the lesions. IMHO, I don't know if this vet has your cat's best interests at heart. Sounds more like your cat is a number to have money made off of, not a patient. But I could be wrong since I'm not there to see how the vet acts.

I feel you may be somewhat right. The next time I go to that clinic, I'll be asking to see the other vet there as I heard good things about him. Once again, the bumps appeared and left. He's now bumpless... for now.

Update: the bumps went away on their own without going into the vet... however, I don't recommend that others take this chance without going in at least once or by your own judegement. Have no idea what these really were.
