Today my friends mother cat was hit my a car and she had one kitten who is 5 days old , I went to the vet and got a bottle and formula for this kitten but it's not sucking at all on the teat .
So now I'm using a syringe to feed it but it won't suck on the syringe either and I'm just trying my best to squirt little amounts into its mouth the best I can , I'm burping it and making it wee after a feed , I'm offering it milk from syringe every 2 hours , it crys while I try to feed it I'm just not sure what else to try to help it suck ??

dont squirt, tummy down, head up, in the corner of the mouth, dropwise, wait till it swallows, next drop or two... In the beginning it will go slowly till you are used.

you can try with a make up sponge, and let it suckle from it, And drop on the sponge with a dropper... goats milk is another alternative.

be sure its warm - ie a active heat source, alike a heating pad.   You may perhaps be forced to give even more often, if it takes little... its about 25-30 ml a day.

If its weak, you can smear some thick honey water on its lips and gum.

It's 200 grams and the vet said it's looking healthy and to keep syringe feeding it slowly about 5-6 mls every 2 hours so hopefully this will help it grow and fatten up as it grows I'll increase the amount in the syringe. The vet was ver helpful and kind x

At that age I think the sponge-feeding method would work well. You can find instructional videos on YouTube. Less chance of aspiration that way.

200 g in a 5 days old is good. Above average.  OR he is somewhat older than 5 days. ints 8ml/oz, so in an 200 55 ml in 24 hour.

Good you had a wise vet. Not all vets are good with kittens and orphans.

Please continue with reporting!

I'm looking at sponges now on YouTube thankyou :) - I also just brought miracle teat hoping it can latch into the syringe with a lock as it's actually now trying to suckle on the end of the syringe and suck it by itself but it's just a syringe with no teat and I'm worried it will inhaled the milk while sucking it by itself , I'm amazed how far it's come from not even trying to suck to sucking by itself in 24 hours !
Gosh we love her , she's so amazing my whole little family are smitten with her including my husband hahah I'll show a photo if I can

She is sucking amazing today , I'm not really pushing on the syringe and she sucks it slowly I slowly and lightly press it but she's doing much of the work !
Should I be seeing 10 - 15 gram weight gain a day ?

Yes, 10-15 g adding is what we want to see on healthy kittens.

When you wrote at the first post you are squirting in the milk, I jumped up.  Very dangerous - very easy to get the milk into the lungs....   Apparently it hasnt happened. God was with you and with her her.  As she is well and suckling now nicely by her own...

I propose let her name be Jonathan "God has given".

Btw, she seems to be a classical" bulls eye" tabby.

She's been to a vet 2 times to be checked up and weighed and they are happy with her progress it's cost me a fair bit though hahah over $200 in 4 days on vets and stuff for her hhaha but well spent just glad she's ok and I'm a proud muma of a baby again ( I have a one year old and 3 year old and 6 year old children so I'm alittle tired but I'm managing fine :)

Best is if you have your own scale  - perhaps borrowed from some neighbour?  Otherwise, such kitchen scales dont need to be fancy nor costly.

You are feeding her the correct amount, which increases as she grows, of course. She is doing well to weigh 6 ounces at a week old. Keep up the nice job! [emoji]128522[/emoji]

Today's weigh in is 174 grams so she's gained 9 grams in 24 hours , im thinking that's good amount but would like to see more towards 10-15 grams in 24 hours hopefully tomorrow offers a Greater amount !
But a gain is a gain and she's just started to open her beautiful eyes
She's also began purring and purrs every burp time lol !
She amazes us everyday !
