What should I ask the vet?

Just discovered Rocky has blood in his urine. I'm taking him to the vet first thing in the morning. Since it will be an emergency visit I won't get to see our regular vet (who I trust). I have had problems with other vets in the past trying to up-sell me on expensive tests/supplements/foods that were not needed or sometimes the vet doesn't seem very knowledgeable. So any questions I should ask? What tests are normal in Rocky's situation? I am hoping it is a UTI which sounds fairly easy to treat, but Rocky is FIV+ so that may make things more complicated? Any advice or info will be greatly appreciated.

Ask for a urinalysis and also a urine culture.  Has your routine changed recently or has there been a lot of upheaval in your home recently?  A lot of times UTIs are stress-related.  I wouldn't necessarily ask about special diet food at this time, which they will probably try to sell you on.

Thanks for responding. Nothing different at home other than we adopted a couple of kittens this summer. That was back in July and he totally loves them. No problems when we introduced them. None of our cats have ever had blood in the urine before. I don't know how long it has been going on. I only found out because he peed on our bed (he has NEVER peed outside of the litterbox before).

He was trying to tell you was something was wrong.  It's really too bad we can't understand what their meows mean.  It would save a lot of grief on both sides.

I would look at some calming agents just in case he's stressed.  I hope this is an isolated incident and that a trip to the vet and some antibiotics will take care of it.
