Hello all -- I know I've read on here a million and half times that you can't really overfeed a kitten, but I still want to run this by you: Kit is now about 6 months old and only gets wet food.  I feed a large variety of canned food, some premium (PRIDE by Instinct-like), some mid-range (wellness-like), and some Sheba/Friskies.  She is given on 3 oz can in morning at about 6:15; then another when my son gets home at around 2.  From there, it will depend on how much food is left when I get home at around 5:30; I let her nibble still on that.  Most times I put down another can at around 7 or 8, when we eat.  Then another before I go to bed at around midnight.

So that's 4 cans of 3 ozs per day that gets put down for her.  Some days she eats every last bit out of the bowl; some days there's a little left in there when I go to put more.  She never eats the whole thing at once; she will eat maybe half when we first put it down, then she goes back to it periodically.  There are flavors that she will walk away from completely without even one bite, but she will eat them if I mix in some raw Boost Mixers or a bit of FD Stella and Chewy's, or some dry crunchies (Instinct is what I think I have on hand currently).

So does this seem OK, reasonable?  I must admit that sometimes things get busy around here and the timing is such that it only works out to be 3 cans per day, but it's never less than that.  She doesn't cry/meow for food, she doesn't act in any way like she's over hungry on those days and she doesn't devour what is put down if it's put down "late".  Some days she eats like a horse, and some days I am tossing food because it's been out way to long.

Any thoughts?  Am I doing it right? My previous fur babies (RIP) were free fed dry when they were this age and before I knew any better; after Buddy got sick, they both got better food, wet food, 2 - 3 times a day but they were over a year old by then.  Also, if this is too much, or if this would be too much once she gets older, when is that? I mean, if it's too much food when do I start weaning down -- after she's one?

Thanks so much for reading my novel, lol.

It sounds okay to me, but the easiest way to figure out how many calories she's eating is to look at the cans of the food. At 6 months she's still growing so I wouldn't really worry about over-feeding her.

My boy is 10 months old and neutered. He is on wet food and he consume around 6 cans of 2.8oz cans per day. 6 times a day, 1 can each time. He is not fat neither is he thin. He was a little pudgy when he was eating 7 cans a day. After cutting down to 6 cans, he look much better. He sleeps a lot but when he's active, he's really active on a daily basis.
Sometimes at one meal, he dosen't finish all his food and sometimes he'll skip a meal when he is sleeping. But he'll meow when he is hungry. So we play by ear but end of the day, it's around 6 cans not more.
Sometimes due to the timing like we are out, he'll miss 2 feedings. So we feed him 1 can and he does not ask for more when he finish eating but he'll ask to be fed a little earlier for his next feed.
