My cat, Herman, started with a big bump on his chin, which evolved into a scab. He flinches when anyone touches it, but otherwise seems normal. Anyone know what this could be? Should we take him to the vet? Thank you!

Yes, he needs to go to the vet.  It sounds like it was an abscess that burst.  He needs antibiotics.  He also needs to have his mouth looked at, as abscesses can develop from dental issues.

Is he allowed outside?  Is he neutered?

Sorry I dunno how to use this site yet. He is indoor, and neutered.

It could possibly be chin acne, but whatever it is, it definitely needs to be checked out by the vet.  Does he eat from plastic bowls?

To me it looks like he got a bite, there are 2 holes, I think I see. I hate to say it but there are mites or little bugs that burrow into skin & cause bumps. Chin acne is distinct, there would be little black pieces all round too, like salt but black.

I would get a cotton ball with some peroxide on it & put it on there. That will clean out if there's any bacteria. Definitely go to the vet tomorrow!

It could also very well be where he scratches, ya know how a cat will take their back leg & scratch under their chin? Maybe he needs his claws trimmed....
