My 16 year old tabby started making slight wheezing sounds about 4 months ago.  He is otherwise healthy.  His eating/drinking and physical activity had not changed so I just kept an eye on it.  The wheezing would get better for a while then return and he would sneeze every now and then.  There has never been any discharge from his nose or eyes during this whole time.  when he sneezed, it was clear.   After about a 1 1/2 months of this, I decided to just get him checked out by my vet.  His lungs were clear, and the vet thought it was probably some type of upper respiratory thing and gave him an antibiotic shot to make sure it did not go any farther.  I took him home and he continued with the occasional wheezing and sneezing but still his eating/drinking and physical behavior had not changed.  I waited for a few more weeks and it was not going away and was more noticeable.  I called the vet and she said upper respiratory issues can last for months and is harder to diagnose if there is no discharge that can be tested, and he never has produced any discharge.
After a few more weeks of it not getting better, I called the vet and she had me pick up some antibiotic tablets although I only got about six of the 10 tablets into him over the course of the 10 days as the ones that he did not get it was because I had a really hard time getting it down or he spit it up orchewed and spit it up or something like that. I watch him for a few more weeks and he got a little better but then after a week or so it started coming back again so I brought my cat back into the Vet and she decided to try a steroid shot and some new liquid antibiotics. I noticed the next day he sounded even worse his nose breathing was very noisy and you can tell he was having a hard time struggling I wouldn't say suffering but struggling to do nose breathing however no mouth breathing. I brought my cat back into the vet the next day as she wanted to do X-rays just to rule out anything in the X-ray showed his lungs were clear his body cavity organs seem fine, she did her best to do a head x-ray to check the nasal cavity for any growth obstructions things of that type but as you know it's hard to keep a cat still so it may have been a little on an angle or skewed so she sent it off to a radiologist, and the radiologist really said that it could be a nasal inflammation it could be some kind of pus in the nasal cavity or it could be some kind of growth but it's too hard to tell on that x-rays and would need a CT scan to properly diagnose. I went back home and kept giving him his daily antibiotics and his breathing is very bothersome and he tries to sleep but his own nose breathing wakes him up so I've been using a vaporizer in the room where he lays or if he moved to another room I'll put it there and I got him in a closed bathroom last night and again today and sat with the Steam and the vaporizer for a good 20 minutes to help alleviate which it seems like it helps until he leaves the bathroom and then he's back to that breathing. Last night he had a hard time sleeping because of the breathing but by the time I woke up this morning, I was surprised to see that his breathing although I could still hear it wasn't that real loud kind of Stuffy congested breathing but I also noticed he had not eaten anything. So I put some food in my hand and he ate it like he was really hungry and gave him some water and he drank it but I noticed shortly after that his congestion came back and he started with the very heavy congested breathing again. So I'm just reaching out to see if anyone else has experienced this I'm trying to find something that can alleviate his symptoms I'm obviously keeping in touch with my vet but I don't think it's a good idea to have to put a 16 year old cat under anesthesia which would be required for a proper CT scan, so just looking for some help thank you for anyone who has experience in this I really appreciate it. By the way, my vet was kind of Leary to put him on benadryl because it could have constipation side effects and would make him extremely tired. I know how I feel when I take Benadryl it wipes me out for 2 days.

I forgot to mention that she has had blood work done twice in the past 4 months. The one she did about 3 months ago everything looked fine and normal, the one she did yesterday showed a slightly elevated white blood cell count, there were two spaces for white blood cell count so this would be the second white blood cell count, don't know if that makes sense I'm doing it from memory, but that means my kitty may be fighting off some kind of infection but that was it everything else looked normal. Yesterday when they took her temperature she was running a low-grade fever

Are you giving Benedryl?  I give two of mine either Claritin or Zyrtec.  One has feline herpes and one has asthma and the vet suggested the antihistamine to keep both of them clear of flare ups.  If you give Claritin (generic is Loratadine), give 1/4 to 1/2 of a 10mg tablet ONCE a day.  If you give Zyrtec, give 1/2 tablet twice a day.  I mash the tablet and mix into wet food with a little bit of water added so it's the consistency of thick oatmeal.

To help ease congestion, you can steam in the bathroom or run a vaporizer near where you kitty sleeps.  I have a diffuser I use for essential oils and sometimes I diffuse eucalyptus oil and that seems to help with the stuffies.  You can also try plain saline drops in the nose one to 2 times a day.  We use the Little Remedies Little Noses saline drops.

Stephanie,  I talked about Benadryl with my vet and she advised against it because of the constipation side effect and that I would really make him very tired/lethargic.  Both of my vets do not think its asthma or herpes.  I'll probably bring him in tomorrow as I really want to get him some relief.  I spoke with the vet today and he was much less concerned than I am; he said I may need to go to a specialist for some kind of nebulizer treatment.  they haven't mentioned anything about other allergy meds.  the poor guy is really having a hard time falling asleep because he gets in a position to sleep and the congestion/his breathing wakes him up.  I have been doing the steam in the bathroom, running the hot shower along with a vaporizer that has vicks in it.  I did it yesterday and twice today and will do it once again before I go to bed.  not sure it helps.  I also keep the vaporizing running in the room where he is, and its been on since Saturday morning.  I asked about the saline drops in the nose and my vet advised against it right now since we don't know for sure if he has some kind of mass in his nose; it could make him more congested. I'm going back to the vet tomorrow.  Its so hard to watch him struggle and be so uncomfortable trying to breath through his nose.  I feel helpless.  Hopefully more answers and some relief tomorrow!  thanks for replying

The reason i mentioned food allergy was because in one part of your initial post you mentioned that one morning his breathing was still stuffy but better and then you fed him and it got worse. Worth mentioning when you go to vet tomorrow.

How did you make out? I'm just reading this now, as I have a 16 year old kitty that seems to have some ongoing issues with her breathing. My vet did a complete blood work up in January, and it was then we found out she has a thyroid issue. She is on meds for this and all is going well with that part of things.
However, her sinuses are another story. I was given an antibiotic, which I had the pharmacy compound so I could give it to her orally via a dropper, as she would not eat if I put it in her food, and she is too feisty for me to try to pill her. This works real well, as the pharmacy makes it fish flavored and she looks for her meds. But, the antibiotics did not change things for her with her breathing.
We decided to try a shot called Convenia. It's an antibiotic that lasts about 2 weeks. This has been administered twice, and it works like a charm, for about 3-4 weeks. She is totally normal, but then starts making funny sounds when breathing. It's not a 24 hr thing, but it's enough that it's troublesome to hear. I wish she could talk.
Now the vet wants to do all these tests. I'm mortified because she had major surgery in 2012, having had a total ear canal ablation...coincidentally on the same side she seems to be having issues with in her sinuses. I don't want to find anything bad, and at her age, I don't want her to have to suffer through surgery. But I want to keep her around, happy and as healthy as she can be, for as long as I can, so I know I have to do this. She is too feisty for any testing, so they will have to sedate her, and that scares me too....because of her age.
I can't find much on line that is more definitive. I wish this little cat could talk and tell me what is going on, as I hate her having to be an experimental patient. I am also told this could be chronic. So, what does that mean? I'm not sure.
Because our kitties are very similar in their behaviors and symptoms, I was hoping you could update what outcome you received from all of this.

Hi S SaraHouse and welcome to TCS!

This thread is quite old. Would you like to ask your question in your own thread?:)
