Just out of curiosity, I have a question regarding the kitties during a kitchen remodel.  We have tossed around the idea for way too long and I think we are finally going to get some quotes.  We can strip wallpaper, paint and take out the old cabinets, etc. but will leave the installation to a pro.  We are nervous about leaving our cat out during construction with people coming in the house but feel guilty about locking him in our bedroom all day for 6-8 wks. or however long it takes.  His safety is our #1 priority so I don't see any other option than putting him in our upstairs bedroom.  What have others done about their cats during a kitchen or other remodel?

Keeping the cats in the bedroom is fine as long as they have everything they need until the construction is done
It's much safer there than roaming the house and getting underfoot and eating stuff that the workers may drop (nails, screws, blobs of glue and gunk, etc) and possibly sneaking out a door unnoticed. Some workers may even insist that pets be kept away from the work area.

When I had a pipe thing fixed (apparently the builder used the wrong adhesive during construction and several pipes throughout the building leaked into units), I boarded my cat. The pipe was in the bedroom closet so there was nowhere I could put my cat other than the tiny bathroom. I was familiar with the boarding place and asked plenty of questions before I signed my cat up for a stay. I myself stayed at my parent's house. No, I could not bring my cat to my parents' house because the house is not cat-safe.

When we have the workers come in, I will confine them upstairs in the bedroom. I have a couple who would want to help and a couple who are 'dashers' and will run out the door if you aren't paying attention.

Thanks for the replies, I thought our bedroom would be the safest place.  And yes, he would have access to everything he needs, we already keep his litter box in our master bathroom so that wouldn't change.

Lynda, hope your kitchen cabinets come in sooner than December.

I thought I would give an update. This is the kitchen as it is now. The guy is coming this weekend to finish the trim work on the cabinets. The counter tops probably won't be installed until the week of Christmas. We still have to get the plumber and electrician out. I am DESPERATELY hoping I will be able to cook for Christmas. I will work something out even if I don't have my counters yet.

Nice, posiepurrs!

Have any sturdy plywood about? Use that as a makeshift countertop, plug your stove back in, and use paper plates for as much as you can.  Make sure you have plenty of help for dishwashing. If you don't have a sink with running water, heat water up on your outside grill to wash dishes.

Next year at Christmas time when you're cooking in your new kitchen, you can say, "Remember last year when......?!" and laugh about it all!

Love your kitchen floor. I really like the color (doesn't show the dirt so much like mine does) & those big tiles are easy to mop.

We hit a snag (well, a couple of them). You can't see it in the photo, but we have crown molding at the top of the cabinets. I choose a decorative molding to go onto the crown molding with a leaf design. Evidently our ceiling is not the same height all over (one side is an inch lower) than the other making the decorative molding to large on that side. It wouldn't look uniform. Out installation guy is going to see if he can find it in a more narrow one. If not I guess I wasted the money for it. The second one is the one that really upsets me. I had ordered the bathroom vanity from Home Depot on line It took forever to get here and when we opened it to install it - it was the wrong color! not even a workable color - a dark nasty brown! I ordered white. If I return it it will be after the New Year before I have that sink. That is the sink I use for the cats baths. I can't wait that long if I am going to show the rest of the season. Camie is going out of condition FAST since she hasn't had a bath in over a month. Looks like I will be painting it and grumbling the entire time about it.

I feel for you, so sorry about the mix up with Home Depot.  Doesn't it just infuriate you when they make such an obvious mistake?
I've been having my doubts about remodeling now, don't know which is worse, the cost or the disruption.  I give you a lot of credit for what you've been through and your perseverance.  Can't wait to see the finished product.

I called Home Depot about the vanity. At first I was told that it would involve returning the vanity and reordering (3+ weeks). I asked for a supervisor. She essentially said it wasn't their fault because it came from an outside vendor. I told her that I bought it from them, NOT the vendor. She offered to refund the shipping and 20% of the price then if I was willing to keep it. Since I didn't have a choice because I can't wait 3+ weeks for another I accepted that offer.
