Hi Gang!

Took my two to the vet yesterday for some check up and blood work for Skye. I've started keeping a daily journal for my kitties and I started to notice some signs in Skye that alerted me that things may be flaring again for her pancreas. Laying on the hardwood floor sprawled out, not going poop as much and yowling more. Again, I chalked it up to arthritis---but I then looked back in my journal and wanted to take her for blood work last week---but other than that, she's been a happy, purring, hungry kitty! She was rolling around playing with catnip toys last night, snuggling with me, she's been more mobile---I figured it was due to giving her medicam for arthritis---but those other signs--the small ones, namely drinking more water (so I was worried about kidney values and her creatin is fine--ureia is up a bit, but can happen with pancreatic flares).

So, when she was SO ILL in August, her pancreatic blood levels went up to as high as the machine can go---50. She was running a very high fever, vomiting, panting---she was SO SICK.

Here she is, cute, cuddly, eating, playing, more mobile(going to sleep in the porch, in the bathroom etc, being on my bed more) and the vet called and said her value was 34!!!!!! WHAT?! Bandit was so ill at a 17 pancreatic reading---I don't understand! How can she not be as sick as she was last time? And it hit so fast, I am now terrified to leave the house or go to work as I don't want to be away from the home/her.

It would be fine if I could have started her right on prednisone, but I have to wait 2 days because she's been taking medicam and the two can't be given together and need time to get out of the system. She only had a tiny amount of medicam last night but I'm not risking it, so the vet said that I could use buperenorphine--I gave her a very small dose and she's fine--good appetite, sleeping normally etc. I was just laying on the bed with her and Bandit in tears because I felt SO BAD that she's obviously been in discomfort and yet again, I missed it and chalked it up to arthritis--though I'm guessing the medicam did help with pain because she would become very happy after getting that.

The vet didn't seem overly worried when she phoned me today and she said 'we always treat the patient not the blood'. Meaning that if she's showing no signs, then we are ok. I took Skye's temperature Weds before leaving for work as I was suspicious then that she wasn't feeling 100%. Her temp was in the normal range, though I actually thought it may be low (pancreatitis sign--the can get a fever first then have a below normal temp). That would explain why she's chilled and snuggling with me.

Anyhow, I'm so upset right now and confused as to how this happened! How can she have such an elevation but show no acute signs?? This always has to happen on a weekend!!!

Thanks for listening....

Everything ALWAYS seems to happen on a weekend.   As your Vet says, treat the cat, not the bloodwork.  So I'd just follow her instructions and I'm thinking Sky will be just fine.

Sometimes the best laid plans just don't work out, as in your being a helicopter mom trying to watch for every little symptom because of what happened in August.  It appears that's not going to work
However, you DID see signs of something, and took her in and found this, so all in all, you got what you wanted...treatment for her before she started to feel awful.  Her numbers may seem bad, but as long as SHE's not feeling terrible, that's what counts.
