It's been almost a week since Will went to ER. There she found a grade 2 murmur and suspected heart disease. The following day he had follow up at our regular vet. Xrays showed enlarged heart. On Tuesday he went for echo and ekg. Given meds. Since then he's gone to hell in a handbasket. Severe lethargy, not eating, hard to pill. I thought with meds we'd start seeing a little improvement but no. We're just stunned. No clue anything was wrong until last Sunday. Is this just a case of getting worse before he starts feeling better? We've been syringe feeding him but he shows no interest. We're starting to think we just need to let him go. Our other cat died of same disease last January. No clue with him either. Just found him on the floor passed away. We got Will from rescue a month later and here we are again. @marrin713...I am so sorry that you are going through heart issues with Will, after losing your other cat from the same disease.

Can you ask the vet if any of  the heart meds can be injected, compounded into liquids, or given transdermally on the ear.

Or can you get 'gel capsules' and put the meds inside one of them, so that it may be easier to pill.

Pill Pockets might also work, if Will likes to eat them.

I hope he does start feeling better. How old is Will?

Sending mega vibes for Will and you.

Thank you. He's done. He's going through the process now. I still believe that there's an underlying condition that brought this on so quickly. I know cat's bodies can adapt to diseases until its almost too late. Caught us so unaware.

You mean that he is passing on? How old is he?

Heart disease can show up so sudden.

I agree about the 'cat's bodies adapting to diseases until its almost too late'...that is so true.

He's only 3. The one before him was only 5. I know we will adopt another eventually but we'll always be hypervigilant going forward.

We had to have him put down early this morning.

Insidious this heart disease.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to you.
I hope that he is running and playing at the bridge now with your other cat.  You are wise to give yourself time to grieve and one day in the future open your home to another fur baby.

We absolutely will have another. I'm in dog rescue and have a little foster right now who is keeping us smiling.

I guess I just feel like there should have been something that we missed over the last couple of months. I know this is a common reaction but knowing that doesn't make it easier eh?

My condolences on your loss of Will, too.
Being 3 years old, he was far too young.

(I know when my 14 year old cat was diagnosed with HCM, it was by the vet hearing a heart murmur, and doing a blood test called proBNP, ...but one of the other vets, and even the cardiologist told me that the proBNP only catches 40% of cases. There were no outward signs that I noticed, with rainbow Spotty's HCM, and it was caught because he needed to have a dental done.

He didn't pass away from his heart, though, but rather from CKD...kidney disease.)

It is natural to look back, and think about any signs, or any thing that seemed odd.

And second guessing, when our cats pass, is also so common.

I'm glad that you have a little foster dog to help you with your grief.

I know that having other animals around always helped me, because they are still here, and need our attention.

Your cat, Will, too, would want you to keep smiling, and be okay.

When you are ready, adopting another cat would be like honouring the spirit of your Will, and the previous guy you lost.

Sending you vibes of peace and strength.

I'm so sorry you've lost Will, especially as he was so young.
This thread will be closed now out of respect as per TCS policy. If you feel up to it later, you may wish to post a tribute in our Crossing the Bridge forum to honour his short life.
