Hi everyone new to the site, i desperately need advice. I adopted two 4 month old kittens in August that immediately had bloody diarrhea, I took them to the vet and they tested positive for giardia. We treated with metronidazole for a month and panacur. 3 days after stopping treatment one cats Riggs immediately started have liquid diarrhea I called my vet and we tested for for all parasites and it came back negative we started a prescription i/d diet and started metronidazole again. A week after that the other cat Murtaugh also began to have mushy diarrhea again, we tested his fecal sample which also xame vack negative for all parasites. We started them on Ronidazole and at first it started to work but recently Riggs has gone back to pure liquid. Both cats are happy, playful, gaining weight and growing, Im wondering if being on antibiotics straight for 2 months in addition to them having giardia for most likely their first 4 minths of life is the cause ir if something else is going on. Im at a loss, my vet is at a loss has anyone else experienced this? I just feel bad the little guys have been through so much.

Have you tried probiotics? Their gut bacteria is probably out of whack after all the antibiotics, so they need something to repopulate the good bacteria. FortiFlora is one kind of probiotic, there are others that I've heard some people say are better, but I don't know what they're called. You could also try adding a bit of plain pumpkin puree into their food, that often helps to firm the stool and assist the gut bacteria. I give my kittens a bit of plain Greek style yoghurt once a week or so, that seems to help their digestion. Good luck, I hope your kittens feel better soon!

I've been giving them both proviable capsules once a day but i feel like the antibiotics are just killing it. Im going to try the yogurt and pumpkin as well as stopping the antibiotics and see if it helps

Yes absolutely, just like humans antibiotics kill off the good gut bacteria and it can take time to rebuild that. IMO you need to use a good quality human probiotic. I use Nexabiotics for my own crew, and a lot of other people use it for theirs as well. To help firm up that diarrhea you really need a probiotic that contains s boulardii, or you need to give it separately. Nexabiotics contains it, which is why it's a really great one to use. You could also start making some slippery elm syrup to give them, which is very soothing and contains some fiber to help firm up that stool. I use slippery elm syrup all the time for my cats whenever someone has a tummy issue. You can buy the powder at almost any health food store (or on Amazon) and then follow the instructions below to make a syrup. You can then either syringe it to your cats, or mix it in their food, or a little baby food.

Has the vet run the PCR diarrhea panel to test for other parasites and such that aren't tested on the fecal float done in-house?  I'd want to rule out tritrichomonas foetus.

What kind of food are you feeding? My one cat had diarrhea when she was a kitten until I changed her food!
