When vacuuming with cats in the house do you take the risk and stick the nozzle under the chesterfield without looking first and risk a cat toy being sucked up and blocking the darn thing up?  Or do you take a chance that this time you save your back by not bending waayyy over low to look you'll get away without that suspicious noise that precedes the clog and means you will have more work ahead of you if only you'd looked first?

I'll pick up all of January's toys before vacuuming. So that they don't end up in the vacuum cleaner. I know how many toys he has and what they are. And if I don't see them , I'll look for it and place it with the rest before vacuuming.

We have a procedure for my weekly vacuum and this is our routine:
  1. Get the catnip out. Everybody gets a wee pile of nip on the living room floor. They eat it, they roll in it, they have a good time. I let them go for about 15 minutes and let them have their fun. Every cat that we have ever had loved their nip.
  2. Get the treats out. Everybody gets some treats. They munch down.
  3. Pick the cats up and take them to the bedroom and flop them into bed (Muffin goes into her stroller in the computer room; Mollipop usually ends up in the catnapper in the bedroom).
  4. While they're napping their nip-high off, I vacuum the living room, steps, kitchen, hallway, and bathroom.
  5. They usually sleep for about 30 minutes or so, then I'll vacuum the bedroom and the computer room.
When I do a quick vacuum, they just get out of my way. Sometimes I'll have to pick somebody up and take them to another room. Muffin hates the vacuum and she has a tendency to try to hide. When I see her, I'll turn the vacuum off, pick her up, take her someplace else, and then finish the room.

I pick up Artie's toys before I vacuum. One time I tried to go around them, and a toy ended up stuck in the vacuum and I could not get it out. It was a soft sponge ball which was caught in the beater bar...I learned my lesson..

As soon as Artie sees me taking out the vacuum ("Monster"); he takes off and runs into the far corner of my bedroom. There is nothing I can do to help ease him..

He will come out eventually, about an hour after I stop vacuuming.

Poor January.  Suffering from a toy deficit.
