Hello, my 5 yr old cat is sick and we don't know what's wrong. Yesterday he became very lethargic, would growl or whine when touched, and would not eat, drink, or go to the bathroom. I took him to the vet today - his white and red blood cell counts were normal, his liver and kidney functions were normal, his urine was normal, and he tested negative for pancreatitis. The vet gave him fluids, an antibiotic shot, and another shot of some kind of stomach soothing medication. She said she thought it was some kind of virus, but she couldn't say specifically what. She thought maybe pancreatitis, but that was ruled out. She wanted to give him a day or so before ordering tests for Feline Leukemia, FIV, and FIP.

When we got home from the vet, I guess maybe it was adrenaline or feeling a little better initially from the fluid, he had a couple bites of food, and I was feeling hopeful that he'd get better. He was still lethargic but he was purring again. As the day went on though, he's gotten worse again. He's very lethargic, growls and whines when touched, and is not eating or drinking. He did pee once, in the litterbox.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? How did it turn out? I am just devastated. He's so young and I love him so much. If it's something terrible, I'm also nervous he could have infected my other cat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would ask for x-rays to make sure there's not a blockage.  Did you discuss gastroenteritis?  We're going through that with my kitty, but he never developed the pain when touched, just vomiting and avoiding food.

Hi, thank you for your response. He's not vomiting, but no, the vet didn't mention that as one of the possibilities and didn't do an x-ray, just a physical exam and bloodwork. Maybe I should mention that. Thanks for the input.

*I forgot to add he had a very high fever of 106 when he got to the vet today. And there was one thing she said about his blood that was a little high, I think she said the protein levels, but not an overly concerning amount. Anyway, I'm doing what you shouldn't do and reading about FIP, and it seems high fever and elevated protein levels are symptoms. Anyone have any experience where something like this didn't turn out to be something awful?

I have no idea what the fever range for FIP is. Maybe this really is a virus that can be treated with antibiotics and they'll just take a little while? I really don't know.

Did they rule out tick/flea borne illnesses?
AND...regardless of the Dr..  The symptoms are the same for MANY things, and If it was a people...A people would get a 2nd opinion.  FAST.

Just following up here... my cat is doing MUCH better today! He is eating, purring, using the litterbox, acting more himself today! The antibiotics needed a day to kick in it seems. Just to be clear, the vet didn't actually say he had FIP or anything, they just mentioned he might need to get tested for it if he didn't improve. And of course I googled it and became terrified. But it seems he is on the upswing! Probably just viral or bacterial infection. Just wanted to let everyone know, thanks for the concern and responses :)
