Okay, the last week has been the hardest of my life (and that may sound dramatic but it's true). ChiChi is a small four year old Tortoise shell. Last Sunday night she became a little strange and was very anti-social (Which is not like her). Anyway, we brought her to a very Sunday night and he immediately put her on antibiotics.

Next morning we got a call from him to say that she had Pyometra and would need to be spayed. He did this within an hour or two of diagnosis and, besides a slow recovery from the anesthetic, she came out of the surgery well.

Four days later she is drinking, but still not eating. The vet, having consulted with another vet, decided that she would be better off at home as she was pining. Now he did not want to discharge her too soon, but felt she may eat at home.

She is sleeping at the moment and has been resting most of the day. However, she did walk around the whole house as soon as she got home.

I will try her later with Royal Canin recovery. If she does not eat it, I will have to resort to syringe feeding.

Has anyone had any experience with a cat not eating for four days after surgery? She was with a vet until this morning and has made a very good recovery up to this point. I would also appreciate any tips with syringe feeding.

Thanks in advance.

Here is a good video.  You can skip the part about pumpkin, she has a kitty with CKD and constipation is a common issue with CKD.  The main thing is to use the side of the mouth, go slow, give a bit let kitty swallow and then a bit more.

Try some other tricks first though.  Different foods, warming the food etc.  You could also try baby food, plain meat no onions or garlic.  A food that isn't complete is okay very short term, no more than a few days.

We have been living parallel lives this past week!  My kitty is male, though, but he started throwing up Friday and ended up being diagnosed with gastroenteritis.  He was in the hospital from Monday until yesterday.  Brought him home to see if he would eat because he is sooooo fearful at the vet.

We did syringe feed him on Sunday before he went to the vet.  One thing that's helped since he's been home is to feed him Science Diet a/d.  It's like kitty crack, but it's only available from the vet.  You can also try getting some Fancy Feast from the store.  Be sure to get the Classic kind.  Add enough water to make it like thick oatmeal and warm it up in either a water bath or in the microwave.  Warming it enhances the aroma and might entice her to eat.

Another option is to ask the vet for an appetite stimulant.  We asked the vet for one, but he wants us to wait to see if my guy starts eating more on his own.  We'll see....

Hope this helps. It's so nerve-wracking when our babies don't eat.

Try enticing her with stinky wet foods, bonito flakes, baby food without garlic or onions, stuff like that. Is she on any pain meds? Not eating is really a sign she doesn't feel well so it's possible she's still in pain.
