Please help! I'm trying to introduce a new kitten to my cat, but I'm terrified he will hurt her.

Thank you to everyone who posted in this thread and got me through this thing. I am happy to say the cats are getting along pretty well now.
This was such a great thread, I am currently going through the exact same thing!! My 1 year old male just seems to be getting meaner and meaner :( he gets that crazy look in his eyes and pouches and bites until she screams every encounter they have :( do you have any tips or advice on what worked for you? Poor little baby girl is so sick of being trapped in this bedroom and is terrified of her big brother! How long did it take before they got along and could co-exist?

I got two kittens about a month after my 11 year old girl lost her brother. They stayed in a separate for two weeks. Then I fed them 10 ft apart one at a time and kept getting closer. I would say it was about a month. They are not best buddies because she is a lady and they are rough housing boys, but the kittens are 9 months now and one is a Maine Coon so he has outgrown his sister. She had a bad infection in her eye and lost it Monday since she has been home she has felt better and the boys know something is wrong because they have both been licking her head and she lets them so it all turned out alright. Hard to be believe my Audie is only 9 months!

This happened today! So thankful for all the advice in introducing my cats. I hope I can help someone else in the future.
Hi Charlies Mom, I have a 12 year old kitty (Gypsy) and about 5 weeks ago got a 6 week old kitten (Lucy). Lucy has her own room and I made a large screen to put up in the doorway to separate her from Gypsy. I started slow, exchanged scents, did the room swap etc. Gypsy never hissed at Lucy's scent and so I eventually started leaving the door open with just the screen separating them....... but once Gypsy saw Lucy and she knew it was another kitty she hissed, growled, lunged at the screen etc. And there was one day Lucy got out of the room while I was trying to get in and she ran into the kitchen where Gypsy was on the table and Gypsy leaped for her and started chasing her while hissing/growling. Lucy got behind the sofa and I was able to catch Gypsy before she caught Lucy or hurt her and lock her in kitchen until I could get Lucy out and get her in her safe room. Anyways, the growling/hissing/lunging is not getting any better. Gypsy will sometimes lay in the hallway about 3 feet from the screen watching Lucy, growling every 20 seconds or so....... I'm really afraid to let them be in same room together. Thankfully Gypsy has no teeth as all were removed last year and she just had her nails trimmed so my vet said that this would be a good time to see what happens and to put them together, that they will never get used to each other if they can't be together, etc..... I'm so scared to do that though since Gypsy even scares me when she hisses/growls. Ugh, don't know how to get past this. I've read ALL the suggestions so just wondering how you ended up having success Charlies mom?

Hello! I am by no means an expert on the subject. But I would say with my cats it just took time, just keep doing what you are doing and be patient. It took several months before I felt comfortable leaving them alone together. One exercise that I found really helped when I first had them in the same room was distracting them with play or food. Keep doing what your doing, take it slow. Best of luck to you
