Was at work yesterday. Got a call on my cell. The guy had such a heavy accent, it was all I could do to understand him. He wanted to talk to me. He really needed to talk to me. About the money I had in my house. He knew I had money and he knew where the money was. He told me where my money was....or so he thought.  I couldn't understand all of it; again, his accent was so heavy. I kept telling him I didn't understand and he finally hung up.

But calls like that freak me out. I worry about the cats. So I took some vacation time and went home. Everything was fine. Took The Beast out to pee, gave everybody some lunch. Checked the house out, checked the basement out. Went over to the next-door neighbors to talk to them....on nice days, he's usually outside and he'd be able to tell me if somebody had been around. He just tends to know. Nobody had been around the house or in the driveway.

I know the guy was scamming. But it tends to freak me out anyway. If something were wrong, if somebody tried to break in, they could do something to the cats. Or the cats might get out. Our younger cats have never been outside. Mollipop has been out, but only in my arms as we walked through the yard. The older cats used to go out on leashes, but even they haven't been outside in years. My two biggest fears are fire in the house or somebody breaking in and the animals getting hurt. So yeah, I went home. Things can be replaced; money can be re-earned. The cats cannot.

My co-worker called me once I got home and apologized profusely for not coming with me. He said he didn't even think about it until after I left and our admin asst chastised him for not offering to come with me. He's flipping out and telling me that he'll come right down to the house. No biggie. I survived and there's no sense in both of us losing vacation time over it. I did call the police, if for nothing else, than a record of the incident. They told me to call the Attorney General's office, so I did that, too. I have the phone number (for what that's worth) and gave the number to both the police and the AG's office.

We don't keep money in the house, other than our normal weekly spending money for gas, groceries, etc. Everything is in the bank, either in checking, savings, or otherwise. And normally I don't answer the phone if it's a number I don't recognize. My cell rang and I picked it up without even thinking about it.

Just thought you might want to know in case somebody gets a similar call.

That's definitely a bit scary!

I've been getting so many scam callers both on my cell phone and landline that I no longer answer and block the numbers on my cell.

What a nerve wracking experience!  I'm trying to imagine how a call like that leads to a money scam.  Where's the hook?  What are they trying to sell you or get you to rescue?   That sounds like some guy making random calls being creepy - and now he deserves a call from the law himself.   I'm glad you reported it.  And thanks for the heads up.

I know that must of been very scary. I've been getting calls lately about someone with an accent wanting to talk to me about my credit cards or my computer. I won't even answer my phone anymore unless it is someone I know.

Oh, that must have been really frightening!! I cannot imagine how you must have felt...

Yes a scam.. but a terrifying one at that..

Several months ago, I had the IRS scam call. Thank goodness I was aware of the scam, but it was still frightening. It really makes you think.. When they say that the government is going to start legal proceedings due to unpaid taxes.. well that is scary. It makes you think for a moment.. I immediately hung up on them..

Now I am getting so many scam/nuscience calls from Direct Energy, it is ridiculous. I do not answer any calls unless I recognize the person calling or they leave a voice mail message..

The Direct Energy company's habit is Call (goes to my voice mail) hang up, wait 3 minutes, they call again~~ again to my voice mail without a message. They wait 5 minutes, call again.... then they wait an hour or so and call again......

all from the same number... stupid...

Then when they cannot get anyone, they will call me with a spoofed caller ID number, get me to answer, and then start the cycle all over again..

or they will have their caller ID have 'Customer Service" listed... if you fall for that, they will start in again.....maddening....

Now, I do not answer my phone, until I hear a familiar voice or identify the number with caller ID...

That's a new one. I've never heard of that one before. Scary.

I used to get calls multiple times a day from spoofed numbers that mimicked my area code and the prefix for my cell. I don't have a home phone. The calls were always in Spanish and it was something about a package deal for Universal Studios in Orlando. If I hit 1 to speak to someone and asked them to put you on the do not call list, they'd hang up so finally I figured out that I needed to hit 2 and finally they stopped calling. I was getting up to 5 calls a DAY from these fools.

DD has gotten the IRS calls telling her that she owes money from past returns that she didn't file correctly. That's nice. DD is a full time student and has never earned a dime in her life much less filed a return- correctly or incorrectly.

She's also gotten the Microsoft calls about the virus they want to help her "fix". After they give her the speech, she gushes about how good they are and then asks exactly how it is that they can tell that she has a virus on her Mac. That quickly ended the call. She doesn't have a Mac but they don't know that.

if you go on Youtube, there are some pretty great videos of people messing with these scammers.

Ugh, the Indian "virus" guys are the worst. When I won't play along with them they start dropping eff bombs.

For several weeks here lately, I kept getting the same scam call routine from one of these robotic voices saying it was the IRS and something about a criminal lawsuit filed against me.  It actually sounded pretty convincing until the end when they got a little too heavy-handed.  They said "If I don't hear from your attorney then I will wish you good luck as the situation totally unfolds on you."

Like, you mean, like totally??  LOL.  I know that was supposed to be scary - and I admit it did give me pause at first - but I actually burst out laughing after hearing this same message over and over.  They always give themselves away somehow.

I've gotten a message on my machine from the IRS scammers.  Goofy people.  The IRS doesn't call, they snail mail a bill for the amount owed.
