I'm fostering a couple rescue kittens. The 5-month old female was surrendered and I was told she was spayed. I'm cuddling with her and I start to rub her belly and I feel like nylon stitches through her fur, sitting on top of her skin.
I told my husband we got to get her to a vet to have these removed. There's no telling how long these have been here since her fur has grown over it. My husband does outreach for a low cost spay/neuter clinic and he swears they are absorbable stitches and they just take a long time to dissolve. We are disagreeing.
Aren't absorbable stitches internal only? I can feel these under the fur, but on top of the skin.

TIA

Can you see them through her fur? Dissolvable stitches DO take a long time to dissolve, and are in the subcutaneous layer, so you would be able to feel them but not see them. If you can see them, then they definitely are in the top layer of skin. If she sits still enough, and you feel confident doing it, you can snip them yourself with nail scissors, and either pull them out with tweezers or let her pull them out herself.

Yes, can feel them And now I can see them - white stitches.

So today I told the same thing to the rescue coordinator and she immediately said, "she has absorbing stitches." But I asked her for the kitten's paper work just to have in case. She sent them to me. It shows that the kitten was spayed on September 1st. Then on post-op instructions, it literally says "bring back in 8-10 days to have sutures removed." ....yikes! This kitten was with a previous foster that never took her back to get stitches removed.

I can't really tell from the pics. But yeah, if you see them, and she'll hold still enough, give them a snip. Once they're cut she can pull them out herself or you can pull them out. Since it's been so long the skin has probably grown on them a bit so I think I'd let her pull them. Or just take her to the vet who spayed her---they should remove the stiches for free.
