Hi I've posted before about my buddy, Catnip. We didn't have a great run with Chlorambucil for his first chemo drug. I was curious if anyone has ever used Prednisone with a diabetic cat to help keep a cat comfortable who has been diagnosed with Small Cell Lymphoma? My vet is also wanting me to try a different chemo med that would be Lomustine given 1 time a month for 6 weeks. Has anyone had any reactions or difficulties with a diabetic kitty and Lomustine? I am very nervous to try another med after the first reaction but would love any feedback! Thank you!

Hi dedem !

I think that, if I were in your shoes, I'd want to put that question to the largest community of feline diabetes caregivers...members of The Feline Diabetes Message Board: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/

I'd also be joining up with another specialized online community https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/feline_lymphoma/info   and putting my questions to those people.  (I just read another story of a lymphoma diagnosis in a diabetic kitty on there)

Hope that helps....please keep us updated!

I also recommend asking for advice on the FelineDiabetes.com message board. There's likely at least a few members there who knowledgable about cancer in diabetic cats and treatment options.

I am a human doctor, not a vet and any advice that I give you should be checked with a vet.  However, in general terms, prednisone will make diabetes very much worse and is to be avoided.  Other forms of chemotherapy should have no effect on the diabetes, but which medication to give is a matter for the veterinarian to recommend.  The veterinarian will know the effects and side-effects of the medication (and the interactions with any other medications; these are likely to be different in felines  as compared with humans) .

With all best wishes,

Geoffrey
